Baby RattleBaby rattles are one of those projects that is a fun gift for your family or for a gift. They are typically spindle turnings and can be made from a wide range of woods. Hard, tight-grained wood with no oil or smells are recommended, Maple being one of the best.
Baby rattles often use captured rings which are a fun turning exercise and something that keeps people amazed trying to figure out how you did it. They should be made thick and strong.
However, there is a safety issue with baby rattles that everyone must be very sensitive too! The size of the rattle and any loose pieces must not pose a threat to the child. So, we've included U.S. Federal Guidelines on making baby rattles. We don't accept any responsibility for these projects or your making baby rattles and recommend that you become be familiar with these guidelines.
 | Small Parts Regulations - Toys and Products Intended for Use by Children Under 3 Years Old by U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commision | This regulation was created to define a set of rules regarding products intended for children under three. The regulation prevents deaths and injuries from choking on, inhaling, or swallowing small objects they may "mouth".
This should be mandatory reading for anyone making any objects that may be used or intended for children!! |
 | Federal Guidelines on baby rattles by U.S. Government | | It's critical to build to certain minimum dimensions in order for baby rattles to be safe for use by babies. In the case of baby rattles, we have some excellent guidelines which were produced by the U.S. Government. These are easy to read guidelines and are a MUST READ for anyone planning to make baby rattles. |
 | Making a baby's rattle by Brian Clifford | | Brian shows how to make a baby rattle and has a great drawing so that you can get the dimensions right. You can make a story board from this drawing which will make the turning easier. |
 | Making a baby rattle with Captive Rings by Dennis Daudelin | | In this photo tutorial, Dennis shows how he makes a baby rattle. The project features "how to make captive rings". So, if you've never make captive rings, this is one tutorial not to miss! |
 | | Turning a baby rattle with Captive Rings by neilwyn (spoken in Welsh) | | Even though the words for this video are spoken in Welsh and most of us will not understand them, you will be able to see how to turn this baby rattle between centers. |
