Drop SpindleDrop spindles are used in making yarn from carded or combed fiber.
Drop spindles are primitive spinning tools, virtually the only yarn making tool until the spinning wheel was invented somewhere in the 1500's. The drop spindle is still the only spinning tool in many remote parts of the world.
Today, hand spinning is becoming popular again and drop spindles are in demand again! The quantity of handspinners continues to increase and clubs and guilds have even formed to support these people.
The two most popular types of drop spindles are: the top whorl and the bottom whorl. Each drop spindle has 3 parts; the stick (called the spindle), the hook (for holding the yarn) and the whorl (which is the broad counter balancing weight). The whorl can be positioned on the top or the bottom of the spindle hence it's name!
 | Making Judi, drop spindle by David Reed Smith | David shows how he makes bottom whorl drop spindles. He uses a custom wood jaws for his chuck and this trick might be useful for many turners.
If you know someone into hand spinning, this article will let you gift them with a wonderful tool for their craft!! |
