Urns

As our population ages with the baby boomers reaching "old age", more and more people have been talking about wood turned urns. There are wonderful vessels designed to hold the ashes of a loved one!

Once again, we can really design vessels with wonderful shapes, woods and embellishments to make this sacred resting ground!!

New Woodturning Projects by Bill GrumbineWoodturning Urns Projects by Bill GrumbineMaking a Cremation Urn by Bill Grumbine
In this project, Bill shows how he turned a cremation urn for a friend of his family. They chose walnut, and Bill found a beautiful piece for the turning.

In this photo journal, Bill shows how he has the 19" long spindle mounted on the lathe and how he approaches the turning process. Due to the shape that the family chose, Bill needed to hollow the vessel from the bottom. This is a different and interesting way to approach the hollowing process. If you have any interest in how turning, this is a good project to review; it may open you eye's to a different way of doing things!

In this project, Brad shows us how he uses ABS plastic threaded inserts on the urns that he turns. By using these plastic threaded pieces, he's able to have a firmly closed top to his urns. Brad's photo's make it easy to understand how to use these easy to find parts for this application!

In this segmented project, Bert uses staves to create turning blanks. Then he shapes them on the lathe to create his final form. Using staves is not unusual but not common so this project is a good lesson in how to approach this technique.
