It took two of us to lift the blank onto Guilio's "Stubby 1000" lathe.

 

With just enough room to begin the turning, little did I know that the
blank would change orientation three times before it was finished.

 

Once attached to the headstock, the tail stock of the "Stubby" was
brought up to stabilize the initial roughing out of the blank.

 

Facing off the first end at 300 RPM, I was amazed at how difficult it
was to keep the gouge steady. My first attempt to turn green wood was going
to be an exhilarating experience!

 

Truing the first face of the blank taught me a lot about "fear" on a
lathe because that 100# hunk of spinning Banksia was making my teeth
chatter.
