Making a Turned Cowbow Hat

Page 4

With the brim thinned to 3/8" I begin to reduce the height of the hat
and form a tenon on the top of the hat for the first orientation change.

With the dovetail shaped tenon completed, I remove the nib and shape the
top of the hat.

The small curve in the brim where it meets the hat band is shaped and
smoothed.

A mixture of vinegar and steel wool is applied to the hatband to
ebonize it. The tannin chemical in the wood turns the hat band black
immediately because of the chemical reaction

A Sorby texturing cutter was used to create a texture on the newly
blackened hat band.
