Making a Turned Cowbow Hat

Page 5

With the hat turned end to end on the lathe, the tail stock was brought
up and a cone center was used to center the original face plate on the
tailstock.

With the dovetail tenon held in the chuck on the head stock and the
tailstock centering the blank on the lathe, we're ready to begin thinning
the brim.

The wood is starting to dry out in places and we continually tighten the
chuck to maintain a firm grip on the blank.

With the tail stock removed, we turn the inside of the hat to reduce
wall thickness and depth.

The brim is drying rapidly while the center of the blank is still wet.
We must move quickly.
