Turning Multiple Near identical Bowls

by Doug Ketchum

I wanted to turn a set of four bowls that would all be the same size and shape. Here is the technique used to achieve that goal. In addition, a shape was selected so they would stack.

Log

Here's my raw stock, just a well dried log
(with a little black dog in the background).

Removing Bark

I've removed all the bark since I didn't want it flying off the lathe while it was turning.

Safety First!

Log mounted between centers

Here is my log mounted between centers.

Roughing the log

Here I am roughing out the log. You also get a nice shot of my
Delta Brand lathe.

Roughing out the bowl shapes

This log was long enough to get 4 bowls out of it.
I've now rough shaped each bowl.

Ready to cut the bowls off the log

I've now completed the outside shaping of the bowl blanks.
I'm ready to part them off.

I then glued each bowl to a round turning block screwed to a turning plate to gouge out the inside and finish on the lathe.

Final bowls

Here are my finished bowls.

4 near identical bowls stacked

And here the finished bowls stacked.
