Wood cups were the only type of cups that were available in medieval days. The metal came and then glass and plastic. Not many people use wood cups these days but they are still fun to turn and use.
Wood cups can be turned into all kinds of shapes. Many woods can be used and white oak may be the favorite as it's internal structure makes it less porous than most other woods.
In this project, Bertie shows us how he turns a cup on the lathe and then carves the outside for a final thickness. He also carves a handle on the cup which then makes it look like a traditional coffee mug.
Malcolm Tibbetts shows us how he makes wood-turned, insulated travel mugs in this wonderful tutorial. Malcolm is most famous as a segmented turner and in this tutorial, shows us the techniques to make these travel mugs which can be done as a single piece of wood or some form of glue-up; lamination or segmented!
This tutorial was originally released in the American Association of Woodturners' (AAW) American Woodturner magazine in the Winter 2007 edition.
If you're a coffee lover and want that "wood feel" or to show people that you're a woodturner, this might be the project for you!!
