While we were at the 2007 AAW Symposium in Portland, Oregon, Oneway
announced a new lathe. It is called the 1236SD lathe. It's an incredibly
invovation lathe designed to be used either standing up or sitting
down. Yes, sitting down!!
You can read their formal announcement in this press
release.
So, this lathe is suitable for people who turn for long periods
of time and can't (or don't want to) stand on their feet that
long and for the more obvious reason, people in wheelchairs
or other sitting devices who can't stand. This really helps
a group of people that we've often heard from that have been
trying to find ways to either start or to keep turning!
While we were at the symposium, we watched Jimmy Clewes turning
on the lathe. You can see that he's quite focused on using
the lathe and is easily making chips!
We were very impressed with the specifications of the lathe, here
are the key things that we learned:
12" swing over the bed
36" between centers
Headstock threading - 1" x 8 tpi
Max speed - 4000 RPM
#2 Morse Taper on headstock and tailstock
1 HP motor using 110V standard (220V optional)
Variable speed from 0 RPM up with forward and reverse
Like everything else in life, some people are going to like it immediately
and others are going to have reservations. There has been an on-going
discussion about this lathe on our forum site. You can read about
other people's ideas and opinions and even add your own.
