Has any one used Waterlox Origional, and what comment's do you have about it. I know it is a mix of Tung Oil and Varnish. Can it be applied over Tung oil? Does it have to be buffed? I have applied it on a test piece without buffing and it looks great. Is it ok to use on Pepper Mills?

I've not used it but if it's tung oil and varnish, then it's okay for pepper mills.

Much of the tung oil on the market is called tung oil finish as it has driers in it. And it's been heated to convert the tung oil into a varnish... so my guess is that it's not that much different...

I also like using urethane oil for pepper mills as the urethane has a really hard finish!

I have used waterlux on a few projects. It is very durable, and water resistant. i am personally not a fan of it by itself. I take it and dilute it with boiled linseed oil. 2/3 waterlux, 1/3 blo. It allows me to be able to wipe it off when it gets tacky which gives it a nice finish. two to three coats seems to work good. I then buff it. You can just use it by itself, but can be tricky to apply because it sets up relatively fast.

you can use it but if you want a high gloss finish get the high gloss waterlox. sand down to whatever great makes you feel froggy. then take a small rag and saturate it and put on a thick first coat. let it set over night, do the same thing again, and the next 2 days just a thin coat. Then let it set for a week and buff it the week gives the coats ample amounts of time to polymerize or do whatever it does and its a very durable finish you should be good for peppermills. The guys at woodcraft said itis only good for 6 months and then throw it away.. my canister is almost 2 years old and its still the same old waterlox.
**** One important safety tip.. lay the rags on the floor til they arecompletely dry before you toss them in the trash or you may wake up to a burnt down workshop:(******

Thanks for the feed back. I have just finished 5 mills which I applied 7 coats of Tung Oil Then 3 coats Waterlox, They turned out very well. Very glossy. I have never done any buffing, do I need to buff them when they are very glossy? And what is the method for buffing? As you can tell I am very new to turning. In fact I have only turned 1 9" Red Oak Platter and 5 Mills (2 Texas Ebony, Pecan, Sycamore & Cedar) Dennis, I am presently turning 2 more Ceder mills and will try the Urethane, will let you know how it turned out. If I could figure how to put pictures in this message I would do so.

Thanks Don

I like to buff all of my turnings. It doesn't change the appearance so much as it changes the 'feel' of them... they feel smoother and more refined...
