How To Turn Perfect Hollow Sphere - No Jig
By: As Wood Turns
September 28, 2018 · 1,183 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I've turned many spheres and have combined two techniques to make them perfect without a jig. But at a club demo, I was challenged to turn a hollow sphere. My response - sure. But, here's the proof. Using the process, I've described in previous videos, the only difference is to stretch out the center of the sphere while still an octagon. In this case, I hollowed the sphere, then glued it back together again. Similarly, I could create friction slip joint or thread the joint. After gluing or joining the halves back together, continue the process from where it was int

Oak Sphere With Sapele Inserts - Episode 147
By: Paul Lockwood
September 18, 2018 · 689 views

A different Sphere from me this time. I decided to use Oak again like in the last Sphere but cut it up and insert some Sapele slices in. Not a Celtic Knot but part way there. With the table saw unable to cut the thickness in one go it caused some minor gapping with the inserts which were filled with dist and CA glue. Sanded, Sanding Sealer, Yorkshire Grit, Woodwax22 and Microcrystaline Wax. For the live edge bowls, when they get dry enough I will basically sand them and apply some form of a finish, probably an oil finish. Woodturning - A Large Yew Hollow Sphere.
By: William Hunt
August 27, 2018 · 3,736 views

A Large Hollow Sphere in Yew. William Hunt Woodturner. An outing with Simon Hope’s Easy Arm Jig & Paul Howard’s Sphere Jig. This project evolved rather than planned since I decided to invest in one of Paul’s Sphere Jigs halfway through the project. It worked very well but due to my late decision I was not able to make best use of it. Nevertheless the outcome was very pleasing. There are some excellent reviews of both these Jigs on YouTube. Sphere Challenge of 2018 Final
By: As Wood Turns
August 02, 2018 · 1,336 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I challenged woodturner to turn a sphere by the end of July. Why? Because spheres are an essential skill. I received some training years ago that just did not work. It took me years of false starts to turn my first good sphere. Since then I've learned and shared the techniques and process that works for me and for anyone wanting to turn a sphere. As a plus, no expensive jig is required. Here are the results of the challenge. This is great work that I find inspirational to me. I trust you will find inspiration also. Ash Sphere - Episode 137
By: Paul Lockwood
July 10, 2018 · 978 views

Alan Stratton at As Wood Turns https://www.youtube.com/watch?v fKBFHTENhVs&t 1s recently put up a challenge to turn a sphere. I did a small practice one in Pine first at around 38mm (quite hard). Then I had another go and recorded the whole process. Using a piece of Ash and finished up with a sphere around 75m / 3' in diameter and sanded to 400. I've not put a finish on this as it will probably be used in a future project. Have a go at making one of these manually this way, it really is a great skill to learn and great fun! Woodturning Essentials - Octagon Method For Perfect Spheres
By: As Wood Turns
May 25, 2018 · 1,913 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com My last video started with turning a perfect sphere then moving on to make it more artsy. However, I received many questions about how to turn a sphere. So, in this video, I'm slowing down and graphically illustrating the sphere turning process. Three measures are critical: 1. Diameter - as measured on the work piece. 2. Octagon corners - 0.293 x the diameter 3. Octagon sides - 0.414 x the diameter. Between the octagon method and simple cup center faceplates, anyone can easily master woodturning perfect spheres either as an end woodturning project or as a component to a more complex project. After viewing this video go back one week to the previous video. Enjoy! Blog: http://www.AsWoodTurns.com FB: http://www.Facebook.com/AsWoodTurns

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I am inspired by the great work I saw at the Utah Woodturning Symposium. My way to praise some of the work is to emulate it. Such is the case with this sphere inspired by Vivien Grandoullier from the Instant Gallery. Essentially, I'm elevating a perfect sphere to a higher level. But first I had to turn a perfect sphere from cedar using the octagon method. The octagon method helps to define the relative dimensions so that my eye is more easily guided to a perfect ball. A little math yields two critical measures for the octagon. Starting with a cylinder, measure the

#32 Making a Sphere - aka a Ball!
By: Andrew Whale
October 01, 2017 · 3,458 views

Making a Sphere (aka a Ball!) Hi This is my first attempt at trying to make a small sphere - about 3 inches in diameter. I don't have any special tools for making a sphere, so I decided to make my own accessories to hold the sphere between centres. The method I used produced a very good spherical shape. When cutting the bead, the centre alignment must have been out by about 1mm which resulted in a flat spot on part of the bead - so not perfect. I finished the sphere by applying colour (spirit stain) and applying four coats of Danish oil. I hope you find this video interesting. I always lik

Hoyle discusses several of the most common methods for hand turning a sphere and demonstrates his preferred approach so that an average turner can successfully turn a sphere. He discusses several methods of fixturing to allow final roundness to be achieved and sanding. He used the scrap from the blank to produce both a friction chuck as well as a stand so the sphere doesn't roll away. References are provided.

N-Loop Perfect Celtic Knot Seeks Perfect Sphere
By: As Wood Turns
June 25, 2015 · 15,075 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com This journey thru Celtic knots has resulted in an easy and repeatable process that greatly simplifies preparation of the turning stock. In previous descriptions, the project wood had to be milled to exact dimensions: squares for four loops being the easiest, triangles for three loop, pentagons for five loops. The significant realization was that it's not the wood that has to be milled. The milled wood was shaped to provide positioning for the cutting angles. Instead, we only need to make plywood polygons that can be attached to the ends of the wood to maintain positi

Turn A Large Hollow Wood Sphere Or Ball With No Fear
By: As Wood Turns
July 19, 2013 · 20,138 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com To dispel my ball turning phobia forever, I decided to do a large, hollow ball. What's different? Well, on a large ball, any irregular surface is more apparent. Even more is that I'm having to turn blind. I cannot check wall thickness as I work the wood -- I have to rely on measurement taken before gluing the two halves together. Then be sure not to cut through into the interior. In contrast, I could keep turning a solid ball smaller and smaller until I get a smooth result. This ball is turned from dry poplar laminated from 2 inch blanks. The ball is about six inches in diameter and finished with beeswax and mineral oil. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next woodturning project video is ready.

Simple Wood Faceplates For Perfect Balls Or Spheres
By: As Wood Turns
July 05, 2013 · 9,514 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com In my last video I turned a couple of wood balls to overcome a long running phobia - a concern that I could ever turn a perfect wood sphere. But I did it. One requirement was to have a process that I described in that video. However, part of the process required a set of wood faceplates. In this video, I show making one of these simple faceplates that are threaded to fit the tailstock live center and have a tenon with which to mount it to the headstock spindle. Either faceplate can go on either end of the lathe. This makes them interchangeable. My faceplates are made from poplar and left unfinished. These faceplates made ball turning simple. The last video in this series will take the process to an extreme. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next woodturning project video is ready.

Turn A Perfect Wood Sphere Or Ball - No Expensive Jig
By: As Wood Turns
June 28, 2013 · 218,840 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com One project during a week long woodturning class a few years ago was a wood ball using a jamb chuck. I failed miserably to get the ball smooth. It ended up very rough and out of round. With this failure, I feared being able to make a good ball. Since then, I've looked for a jig or a process to turn a perfect ball or sphere. I doubted I could do it myself. I looked at commercial jigs - expensive and plans for DIY jigs - difficult to make and potentially inaccurate. More recently, I watch Dale Larson and Alan Lacer both turn perfect balls using only simple faceplates.
