This is how I remove a tenon after turning a bowl. I'm sure there are multiple way to do this, just thought I would share my way. This method leaves the smallest amount of material to sand with no sawing or chiseling needed. The key is to apply pressure with the gouge bevel pressing the bowl towards the headstock.

Finishing Bottom of Burl Bowls
By: Nick Rosato
December 09, 2016 · 78 views

This is my jam chuck approach to removing or reshaping the tenon on the bottom of bowls. I use a 1/2' bowl gouge and spindle gouge. I leave a small nub and then remove it with a flat chisel. I use this approach when the vacuum chuck will not work. In this case, the burl wood had small voids and bark inclusions that didn't allow full vacuum so I had to use jam chuck.

It shows some more advanced aspects of wood turning. The bowl blank was roughed out when it was wet, sealed with a waxy coating, and placed is a temperature controlled storage for a couple of years. This slow drying process warped the wood and let it dry without cracking. Now it is ready for the final steps, returning it to round and finishing it.
