Woodturning Two Bowls, One Disaster, Two Final Results
By: As Wood Turns
August 24, 2018 · 2,016 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I'm extremely disappointed (to say the least) when a bowl cracks. It's bad enough if it cracks while drying. But it is even worse if it cracks while I'm working on it. In this case, it cracked during sanding. In my period of dispair, I turned another identical bowl from the same sequoia. I had time to think about the broken bowl. After weighing alternatives, I decided to cut it up to make flower petals then reassemble it into a flower bowl. After cutting the bowl into five petals, I temporarily screwed each petal to a cylinder base while I dabbed quick epoxy into

Woodturning Resin and Wood - Black Mesquite
By: R Humphrey
July 20, 2018 · 18,703 views

Woodturning something and re-upload by the thieves out there. different - a grid pattern using epoxy resin with Black Mesquite wood. I enjoyed using the resin…I didn’t enjoy turning the Black Mesquite! Maybe it was this particular chunk, but I could hardly get a shaving of wood off of it, mostly just dust. No matter how sharp the tool. That being said, I seemed to have better luck with my scraper that my gouges this project. I used walnut oil and Renaissance Wax for the finish, and it does end up with a nice grain and feel. Wood turning a new wood is always an adventure… I’ll be upping my resin game in the future! I like it! 16k subscribers!!!!! Wow, Thank you so much! You all motivate me! More vids coming soon :) I watermarked this video, let me know in the comments if it gets in the way or is otherwise a bad thing...

Woodturning Wavy Flower Bowl Inspired By Ceramic Display
By: As Wood Turns
June 15, 2018 · 2,061 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com This project is inspired by a wall display at a hotel. The display looked like a field of flowers. My thought upon seeing the display - What can I do that is similar? Here it is, a maple bowl with a wavy rim that makes a strong resemblance to a flower. The major change is to leave a very thick rim that I could carve into a random wave. My maple bowl is about seven inches diameter and about two inches thick. Enjoy! Fun little project I picked up watching a Mike Waldt video from a month or so ago, I made it out of a piece of Beach I rescued from a log pile, it probably took me 3 plus times longer to actually do this than it did Mike, I'm only 2 months or so into my turning abilities, I tried to talk a bit but had to speed most of it up due to video time restraints. LOL links are below for Mike, Jeffrey Dean and The Walnut log where I purchased the Yorkshire Grit. Pleas like, share and subscribe it will make my day. and again Thanks for Watching ! Huon Pine Yarn Bowl
By: Fatso's Workshop
May 10, 2018 · 155 views

I picked up this Huon Pine bowl blank in Strahan one one of my trips down there over the last few years. Huon Pine has to be one of the best timbers in the world, it's a slow growing tree, the second longest living in the world (behind the Bristle Cone Pine). The timber is naturally rot and insect resistant due to the oils and compounds in the timber, making it the foundation of the colonial ship building industry in Tasmania. On top of that, it works beautifully and looks and smells amazing. I'm turning this into a yarn bowl that I will be taking to the Soul Craft Festival next month _____

Wood Turned Walnut Bowl with Diamond Pattern

April 08, 2018 · 111,088 views

I have a walnut bowl that I roughed turned several years ago and it's now dry and ready to be finished. It is in good shape and has not cracked during the drying process. I decided to add 2 rings at the rim of the bowl. I wanted to do the segments with an angled cut to give the seams between the segments an angle. I used this to make a diamond pattern of padauk within walnut rings. The finished bowl is a solid walnut base with the rim of walnut with a diamond pattern. Woodturning An Offset Slat Bowl - Round 2 - Not This Way!
By: As Wood Turns
March 30, 2018 · 3,367 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com In round 1, I only glued the slats for this bowl to top and bottom waste blocks. That did not work so well. This time, I thought double stick tape would be just the thing to temporarily hold the slats together. Well, the tape did exactly that - held the slats together. However, it did not easily release its hold on the slats. I damaged some edges while separating the slats. While I like this style of bowl, there has to be another way that will hold the slats together but also release them when necessary. I'm not there yet. In the meantime, here's another way NOT to turn this style of bowl. I like the result but not the process. Enjoy! Using a lump of Oak that was sold as Firewood this was mounted on the lathe at the corners. Slowly taking the to round on one end for a tenon it could then be mounted in the chuck to hollow out. I've seen a couple of people recently do these, Steve Twydell from Templeboy Turnings and Mike Waldt which failed due to cracks in the wood. My oak also had cracks, but they could be filed and didn't have any impact on the structure of the bowl. As usual I wanted to put my take on this. With the sizes of the blank it allowed for a more steeper sided bowl. As it wasn't square two of the fins are long

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I was browsing turned wood images and saw a unique bowl made of slats that seemed to protrude from the brim. My first thought - How can I turn that bowl? After pondering several alternatives, I had to go for it. Now after making one, I have to change my process. First, here's what I did. 1. Milled 11 slats 0.5' thick, 2' wide, and about 8' long. 6 of walnut and 5 of oak. 2. Alternated the slats and clamped them together. 3. Prepared a waste block for the top and bottom. In this case, I sanded some scrap OSB since I needed a perfectly smooth surface. 4. Applied whit

I mostly used a round carbide tip Easy Tool and a 1 inch round-nose scraper. The timber was very out-of-balance so it was slow turning. Sanded with 120, 150, and 220 grit sandpaper. It was finished with lacquer based sanding sealer and rub-on polyurethane.

I wanted to try something a little different here. I took a boring square bowl blank and cut some curves in it to make room for some thin strips of wood to be laminated in. The process took several days but the bowl ended up looking much better than if I had just turned the bowl out of the solid blank. Try it out and share your results. Also if anyone has a better idea/technique please put it in the comments below. Thanks for watching.

Woodturning a Chip'N'Dip/Pistachio Bowl for Christmas - Ash and Yew
By: Nathan Cumming
December 28, 2017 · 2,715 views

In this video I turn a Chip and Dip bowl out of a block of Ash to give as a gift for Christmas. While turning I discovered a crack hidden inside the Ash so it was necessary to cut a strip out and glue in a contrasting insert. I chose Yew for that purpose as the piece I had was the right size and I had never used it before. In the end decided to segment the inner cup out of Yew too so that there was more of a contrast of colours and grains in the final piece. The piece was finished with Yorkshire Grit and Hampshire Sheen High Gloss on the outside and Yorkshire Grit and Carnauba Wax on the ins

#40 Walnut Yarn Bowl
By: Austringer Creations
December 26, 2017 · 173 views

A yarn bowl I turned out of walnut for a Christmas gift, finished with Teak Oil. It's been a rough couple of months, a lot has happened. I was out of the shop for a few weeks in early October and didn't really get started back up until early November then I lost the videos for three projects. But, there is also quite a bit of good that has happened as well; I got a bigger lathe for a song because the electronics were burned out (I'm hoping I can repair that with a 5 part I have ordered, my soldering iron is sitting ready on my workbench!). I've been busy with Christmas gift projects, both for customers and for me to give and I have quite a pile of wood shavings outside my shop to show for it.

No talking. No tool noise. Just sit back, relax, and watch me turn a Tibetan bowl mallet while listening to soothing Tibetan singing bowl music. Affiliate links below Some friends asked if I would make a replacement mallet for them. They came over to watch me turn it in my shop. I used a block of maple and held up the old cracking mallet for a general guideline. When used for playing music, the rounded tip is held in the palm, the fingertips hold the narrow neck, and the longer part strikes or brushes against the bowl. -----------------------------------------------------------------

The Basket Weave Illusion Effect Hi This is my first attempt at trying out the basket weave illusion effect - applied to a small platter. As a regular reader of Woodturning magazine, I was intrigued and inspired to have a go at this after seeing an article featuring Michael Alguire, who uses this technique. This is by far the most complex and time-consuming project I have undertaken so far. I am really pleased I gave it a try and I am extremely happy with the result. I will definitely apply this technique on other projects but I am not sure I would undertake such a lengthy project again! M

In this Video I use a piece of Idigbo to turn a Chip 'N' Dip / Pistachio Nut bowl. I acquired this piece of wood from a local joiner who builds stairs, doors, window cases and occasionally sells decent sized hardwood offcuts that are great for turning. I had never heard of Idigbo before and wasn't sure how it would turn so he gave me a piece for free to try. The grain patterns in this would are stunningly beautiful, and the tone of the wood is a lovely warm golden brown. It was also very easy to turn, similar to Walnut in its density. You do need to be aware of tear out on the fibres of the

Turning an Australian Hardwood Yarn Bowl
By: Fatso's Workshop
August 30, 2017 · 2,835 views

I've been working on this yarn bowl for the last few weeks in between jobs, kids parties, other projects amongst other things. I haven't managed to spend much time in the shed at all recently. This one is made from all Australian Timbers, Jarrah from W.A. and a local Victorian Ash. I liked the Jarrah but the Vic Ash is a bit too straight grained so can be prone to throwing off some larger chips while turning. I might try to substitute that one at some point maybe for some Blackbutt from NSW or something similar to produce the same colour scheme. ____________________________________________ WWW: www.fatsosworkshop.com Etsy: fatsosworkshop.etsy.com Insta: Instagram.com/Fatsosworkshop ____________________________________________ Indian Summer by Lobo Loco is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License. My general plan was a triangle but with arcs instead of sides. No plan works out perfectly and my bowl turned out even more misshapen than planned. The bowl is approximately 7 inches by 5 inches and about 2 inches high, finished

#23 Pewter Rimmed Spalted Beech Bowl
By: Andrew Whale
May 21, 2017 · 1,744 views

Hi This is my first attempt at turning a pewter rimmed bowl. I was inspired to have a go at this after watching a video by Bram the Wadesmill Woodturner. He created a great looking pewter rimmed bowl. His YouTube channel is: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEHcSv7-eoRVkyyksXsnrBA My video focusses on the method and making of the pewter rim, rather that the turning of the bowl. During the making of the pewter rim I suffered a really bad catch. I then used a glove on my left hand which, in hindsight, wasn't good practice. As such, please do not copy me. I hope you like the bowl and find this

Inspiration From Grapes - Scrollsaw and Lathe
By: As Wood Turns
May 19, 2017 · 3,905 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I got this idea from the Utah Woodturning Symposium, specifically Raleigh Lockhart's presentation. It entails cutting a leaf shape on a scrollsaw then turning it on the lathe. My leaf plate is a grape leaf about 6 inches in diameter and about 1 inch tall. It is turned from maple with a lacquer finish. My process: 1. Find a good shape from leaves in my yard or on the internet. 2. Prepare a pattern on my computer, including finding the center of the leaf. 3. Preparing the wood and attaching the pattern to the wood. 4. Sawing the leaf shape on the wood with a scroll

Wood bowls are decorated with Celtic Ring (Celtic Knot) inserts and then turned on the lathe. The Celtic Ring Jig described in a previous video is used to cut the slots to produce the Celtic Ring patterns. Single wood as well as multi-layer woods are cut on the Accu-Slice system to produce the precision thickness inserts required for this project. Detailed description of the process to produce these is presented along with tips to aid other wood turners in producing similar patterns.

Check out Jim's channel (Jimson's Stuff) at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6h82LH3PtdiSHaj_7f09Fg The aluminium material was created by mixing epoxy resin with aluminium powder. I encountered numerous air holes in the aluminium when sanding, and it took ages to fill and re-sand. I will think twice before using this method again and any advice on alternative methods would be welcome. For the coloured pattern I used 3mm opaque acrylic. Next time I w

Limbs Lashed Together For Rustic Wood Bowl
By: As Wood Turns
April 21, 2017 · 9,134 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com This project has been a long time in development. While looking at my stash of hazelnut suckers pruned last year, I wondered if I could line up three or four pieces and then turn a bowl. The problem was how to join the limbs together. They could not remain separate and function together for a bowl. My first thought was to use dowels to join them. That seemed tacky to use common dowels for a fine woodturning even if the exterior is rustic. Next thought was to route a groove for a spline. I would mill the spline from the same wood as the limbs. This seemed to be a

A Small Emerging Bowl From Spring Pruning

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com After recently observing a demonstration in a local woodturning club, I had to turn an emerging bowl. This is the best way to hammer home what I observed. Then I can explore alternatives and combine features. In this video, I went much further using green wood from a hazelnut branch removed in spring pruning. Squared lumber would have been an easier place to start but I am a glutton for punishment and went for a natural edge leaving the bark intact. The limb was about 3 inches diameter. I initially cut it about 8 inches long. My process was 1. Prepare a waste bloc

At one stage I thought it would turn out to be a total disaster, but I'm now very pleased with the result. However it's not really practical as a bowl! I'm starting to gain a lot of confidence with the bowl gouge and I love it when the wood comes off in streams. Apart from lots of practice, I've learned that it is vital to have sharp tools. I've found that spending just 5 minutes sharpening my tools before starting on the lathe can make a huge difference in te

Last bowl for 2016, a Black Walnut and White Oak yarn bowl. It was a bit hot and humid over the days that I shot this so it took about 3 or 4 sessions, usually before the heat got up too much in the day. These are laminated up out of 8' x 2' boards, then turned into shape. I then drill a hole and cut the yarn slot into the bowl. Because I'm aiming at 8' diameter and 4' deep, it's hard to reliably obtain decent single piece bowl blanks without milling my own, I'm limited by the storage space that entails at present. I'm always on the hunt for that size when cruising through the wood turni

Wood turning a bowl from Norfolk Island Pine - some bits of wood just don't want to be bowls
By: Fatso's Workshop
December 24, 2016 · 1,012 views

I picked up this bowl blank a while ago and thought it would make a nice yarn bowl. Once I started turning it two things were obvious: firstly, the timber was really nice, I haven't seen much Norfolk Island pine before and was really impressed with it; and, secondly, there was some nasty checking in the end grain from the drying process. I tried filling the cracks with epoxy but as I got closer to a finished bowl, the rim kept chipping out. I thought I could salvage at least a bowl to use around the house and I still might, if I'm lucky, but it didn't turn out quite as I'd hoped. Some bits of wood just don't want to be bowls. Music: All of them ladies - Machine Gun Fellatio I love this track, it always come to mind at this time of year when the weather warms up

I decided to make a bowl out of the plywood. I saw similar design on Pinterest by Gary McGrath: http://www.garyhmcgrath.com/ That was quite easy but a little bit time consuming - or maybe I am just overhelmed with my business duties. Anyway, that was a lot of fun! :) Music: http://www.bensound.com

Wood Turned Finger Jointed Bowl
By: frank howarth
April 24, 2016 · 1,377,173 views

I have wanted to wood turn a bowl from a finger jointed box. I picked out a piece of walnut and a piece of cherry. I milled each piece to the same dimension. I then made segments for a ring from these two pieces. I milled the end of each segment on the CNC router, to form a finger joint between each segment in the ring. I attached a bottom to the bowl by cutting a circle into the end of the ring to receive a round segmented bottom. I turned all of this on the lathe to the form finished bowl. Australian Red Cedar Yarn Bowl

A time lapse video turning up an Australian Red Cedar yarn bowl, compressing a few hours into a few minutes. I realise now that I spend a lot of time with sandpaper in my hand (I did try to speed that up as much as I can) I really love working with Red Cedar, it's easy to see why it was so desirable as a furniture timber in the early days of the NSW colony. It is a pleasure to work and the colour is superb. Unfortunately it isn't widely available now due to over exploitation of the past but it's always nice to get hold of when you get the chance.

Tom Turns: Three Footed Bowl - Woodturning

In my latest project video I turn a 'three footed' bowl from dry rippled sycamore. Before turning this I had produced a four footed bowl, however I found that four feet would not sit on an uneven surface (or if the vessel was uneven) and so I learnt from the experience of others and produced this three footed variant! Further projects, turnings and information can be found at http://tomturns.com Enjoy and please remember to like, comment and subscribe! Thanks I am not a professional turner. Things I do and say may not be applicable to you or your style / level of turning. This video is for entertainment only and is not produced as a tutorial. Cloud Bowl
By: frank howarth
March 18, 2016 · 114,002 views

This bowl is made from a flat piece of walnut. The walnut is cut into rings, and these rings are stacked to form a bowl. I used my CNC router to cut cloud shapes into the side of the bowl. I filled these holes with corresponding maple clouds. I turned the maple and walnut together on the lathe to form a bowl with clouds around the side. I gave the bowl a very small foot to give it a feeling lightness. Frank Howarth - Father, husband, and interested in architecture at a small scale expressed through woodworking and film making. Wood Turned Wedding Bowl
By: frank howarth
January 07, 2016 · 241,812 views

The previous 4 videos put together into one complete project I have been commissioned by my father-in- law to make a wood turned bowl wedding gift. The idea for this piece is to have two different woods coming together to make a whole. I am using walnut and padauk . The structure for this bowl will be rings of 12 segments stacked to form the bowl. Each ring will be half walnut and half padauk. With the form of the bowl made, I can cut the center section, where the two different woods come together, out on the band saw. This took a lot of measuring to get the 2 cuts in the right place o

Wedding Bowl: Parts 4 and 5 of 5: The Glue Up and Wood Turning
By: frank howarth
January 07, 2016 · 89,621 views

With the segmented center section made, I can sand both sides as well as the two halves of the bowl to get them ready for the final glue up. I cut the length of the center section so all three pieces would sit flat on the table with the rim facing down. I then glued all three parts together holding them with hose clamps. Most of this project was getting to this point where I could wood turn all of this wood into a bowl. I started by making a tenon at the base of the bowl for the scroll chuck to hold onto. I then turned the outside of the bowl, following the form of the center section. I then turned the inside. I sanded the inside and outside to 600 grit sandpaper. I turned the bowl around once again and finished the base of the bowl. I used butcher block finish on the bowl. Wedding Bowl: Part 3 of 5: The Section
By: frank howarth
January 06, 2016 · 92,403 views

With the bowl cut and its section revealed, I can make the center piece that will replace the part I cut out. To make the segments for the new center section I glued a piece of walnut and a piece of padauk together. The seam between the two pieces is a curve I cut on the CNC. The curve looks like a puzzle piece. The overall shape of this new center piece will be the section of the bowl, as this is where there is material to form the shape of the bowl. This week I have been going through some issues of a very good woodturning magazine from the UK called Woodturning. The publication I get is a digital version from an online provider called Pocketmags. In two of the issues, were articles about making turning blanks from Baltic birch plywood and hardwood. The January 2014 issue was a plywood and hardwood platter and the July 2012 was a simple bowl made from a Baltic birch plywood stack. So I decided to give this a go and used some 3/8' Baltic plywood, that was of limited use as it had warped a bit, and sandwiched into the blank some walnut sl

By: H F Bowern Designs - Harold Bowern
November 02, 2014 · 2,236 views

Well I decided to make a Scottish Quaich, after watching Larry at the Tiny Trailer Workshop on YouTube. I started with a piece of Canadian Maple, a piece 2' thick x 7' round. I had done some research on the web to find many designs and took one from a great website http://www.woodenquaich.com/ The gentleman here has many fine versions of the vessel, so I wanted to try and make my own on my lathe. I hope that I have done a respectable representation. Thanks again for watching, I really do appreciate it. If you like this video, please click the 'Like' button. If haven't already don't fo

Bowl Turned from Scrap Construction Lumber
By: Chas Thornhill
October 30, 2014 · 75,051 views

In this video I turn a bowl from a cutoff section of construction lumber beam. The wood was given to me by a friend and he challenged me to turn a bowl from the scrap cutoff. Never one to back down from a challenge, I was happy to chuck up this interesting chunk of wood and see what I could make out of it. Thanks to everyone who has subscribed to my channel in recent months. Earning a living has required me to travel more than usual this past year, and I have not had a chance to turn much or edit videos lately. Thanks for your patience. The music in this video is available at ccmixter.o

A Quaich like this is used as a vessel for Scotch... so I am assuming about 3 ounces... I haven't actually measured it... but a shot and a half each sounds like a good settlement! But they also make Quaichs for beer... and those get up to 1.6 liters! Now there would be a good way to start a wedding! So this was as much different as it was the same! I sort of sound like a broken record with my ebony and ca filler... but it has done a pretty good job again! Like I said in the video though I think I will have to look into the resin products as well! I've seen some of the things that Peter B

It is somewhat disappointing when you take a nice 12' plank and decide to make a bowl out of it... only to find that it is cracked all the way through. So it is time to make a smaller bowl! Who knows... I may even be able to make four bowls now! When you mix the spalting with the figuring, I find that the grain almost lines up to make a picture... a stream flowing along through the hills! As far as my shout out is concerned... Cap'n Eddie is one of those guys who has been on YouTube for as long as I can remember and for all that time he has put out video after video,,, showing us different ways to use our lathes! https://www.youtube.com/user/capneddie

The Big Bowl Turning: Stacked Ring Technique

Turning a big 19.5' x 6' bowl out of maple and cherry, using the really cool process of stacked ring lamination. The concept is similar segmented bowl turning, but works a little differently. Just like segmented turning a lot of gluing is involved, but the clever cut rings make it a little more efficient and very economic. I will be posting an an article on the website soon, to provide more detail about the process, so keep an eye out! Making a 3 sided bowl using Robert Sorby Stebcentres
By: Robert Sorby
February 28, 2008 · 29,265 views

Making a 3 sided bowl using Robert Sorby Stebcentres. These revolutionary wood lathe drives are an essential addition to every turner's toolkit. Made under licence (Patent 2286138), their design incorporates not just a spring loaded point in stainless steel but also a set of razor sharp teeth which bite into the workpiece. For the novice turner this offers added security. By winding in the tail stock the degree of bite can be varied and the centre point firmly located. In the unfortunate case of a dig-in arising the workpiece simply stops revolving rather than kick back the turning chisel. This allows the beginner to use his skew chisel with a degree of confidence.
