a really REALLY big faceplate (revised!)
By: RickTurns
October 25, 2018 · 2,791 views

Note that this is an update to my original video of this title. I had forgotten to include a clip on using the faceplate, and even though it isn't complicated, I have had a few questions on it. I have deleted the first video, so if you tried to watch it and got 'video deleted', I apologize. For finishing the bottom of bowls, I wedge the bowl between the tailstock live center and a REALLY big faceplate. Here's how I made that faceplate. The music during the close of the video, 'Happy Little Elves' by Audionautix, is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Artist: http://audionautix.com

Second part of this video, the chuck adapter. There are other videos that follow this process, but I wanted to tie in the first video, and show how well it worked. Except for the face plate, most of the parts come from the hardware store. It may not be as pretty as the manufactured ones, but it works pretty well! Enjoy!

Fixing Chuck Damage
By: Maple-Crossing Woodworks
May 26, 2018 · 315 views

I recently attended a Jimmy Clewes workshop put together by the Mid-Maryland Woodturners Club, in which we made some beautiful square oriental jewelry boxes. (if you ever get the chance to take one of his workshops, I HIGHLY recommend you take advantage of it!) In the process, we mounted the lid back onto the chuck in order to turn the top. Unfortunately, this caused a small amount of damage on the lid, while not structural, it was less pleasing to see. Here is a method for fixing these types of dents in wood. Enjoy!

Chucking Challenges in Woodturning
By: Mike Peace Woodturning
March 16, 2018 · 2,858 views

I show how I deal with trying to hold a previously finished captive ring baby rattle on the lathe. The shaft was way too big which is probably why it was still in a drawer years after I had turned it when many more had been turned and given away or sold. Should you buy a Record SC4 chuck?
By: RickTurns
October 16, 2017 · 13,397 views

I really like the Record SC4 chuck. I review the chuck in this video, and compare it to the Nova G3 and the Oneway Stronghold chucks. Update on 10/28/17: The SC4 that I have has a chuck insert that does not have a locking screw for the lathe spindle, and so should not be used for reverse turning, regardless of the locking screw that secure the chuck to the insert. Record does have a 1 1/4 x 8 insert with a spindle locking screw. If you purchase this chuck and want to do any work with the lathe rotation direction reversed, be sure to get the insert with the spindle lock on it. Update on 10/2

Wood Turning: Using the Screw Chuck to make a cored set of Bowls Blanks

Today on Turning Round we are going to talk about the screw chuck and the McNaughton coring system. I had a friend ask me about the screw for his chuck and how to use it. So I thought that is a good question to answer in a video. I have also been turning a bunch of cottonwood from a tree that I got for free from the local classifieds. It is a huge tree and I have been turning the blanks and make bowl set out of them from the coring system.

In this video I'll be showing the new Nova G3 scroll truck I just bought that came in a package with two sets of extra jaws and a set of Cole Jaws for turning bowls it's worth noting that these are not mandatory for woodturning. I've been woodturning for a couple months now and just got around to buying this so don't rush out and grab one just because you see it in my videos it is not necessary. In later videos, I will show you techniques for not having to use this. However at its current price 150 for both the chuck and the extra jaws, it is well worth the investment and will save a lot of headache and a hassle.

Robust’s Collet Handle System is a joint development between noted turner David Ellsworth and Robust Tools. David designed the triangular wooden grip to give comfort and control. Robust designed the collet system around popular ER series collets. The Collet Handle System gives turners a way to quickly and confidently change tools utilizing the same handle. With 4 different collet sizes included with each handle size you can easily swap out tools with a twist of your wrist. But it’s not just tool changing that is important, simply removing the tool for grinding greatly facilitates the use of grinding jigs.

Wood Turning 101 Barracuda 2 and SuperNova 2 Chuck Review
By: Turning Round
February 04, 2016 · 5,062 views

In this video I talk about my wood turning chucks and the difference between the two different styles I have. One is a Barracuda 2 chuck with an accessory kits, the other chuck I have are Supernova 2. Wood turning Chucks are used to hold a piece of wood in the lathe for turning. They are commonly used when making a bowl. You put a tenon on the bottom of the bowl and then secure that in the chuck. If you want to check out the Nova 2 chuck here is a link to it on Amazon. Woodturning: Adjusting Eccentric Turning Depth in a 4 minus 2 Jaw Chuck
By: Jerry Paul
November 30, 2015 · 1,186 views

The other day, one of my favourite youtube woodturners, Al Furtado, 'The Rebel Woodturner' gave me a fantastic shout out in regards to the method I came up with to turn an eccentric piece. Thank you Al!! (I'm still puffed up like a peacock about that!!) But! He also issued a bit of a challenge. ... I think this video may be the answer to that. :) In this video, I show that I can also adjust the depth of the eccentric turning, using the jaws on my chuck, although not with as much precision as with Al's eccentric jig.

My Home Made Scoop Chuck For Difficult Mounts
By: As Wood Turns
July 23, 2015 · 61,575 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com This scoop is actually my Vicmark vm120 body with wood jaws mounted to the body. The jaws are made from an 8' by 8' by 1/2' piece of Baltic birch plywood(the good stuff). The standard jaws were used as templates to mark bolt holes. The holes were then counter sunk and stabilized with thin CA glue. The jaws are attached with bolts a little longer than the standard bolts to allow for the additional thickness of my plywood. On top of the plywood, I glued 2' thick cedar since that is what I had available. The wood can be anything stable and readily available. This wood i

Woodturning Oval Bowl Scoop With New Scoop Chuck

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com This scoop is another style I saw Soren Berger turn recently. The difference is the oval bowl that makes the scoop more difficult to hold while hollowing the bowl. I wanted a better way to hold the wood than a jamb chuck or a scroll chuck. Jamb chucks require wood and custom tooling and are unusally used only once. Scroll chuck leave nasty marks on the wood that must be disguised with decorative elements or sanded smooth again. The brainstorm is a set of wood jaws that bolt on to my scroll chuck body. The chuck body provides clamping pressure. The wood jaws provide q

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com Jerry Klug wrote an article for Cascade Woodturners on turned eggs and chucks for making eggs. This video will focus on my adaptation of these chucks for my use. One early chuck was from Dick Sing using PVC slip fitting. It works on a compression principle with the force supplied by a band clamp. In my opinion, its disadvantage is the risk of personal injury from the band clamp. The second chuck was from Vern Bunn using a PVC threaded coupling (2-in-PVC-S-x-S-Compression-Coupling). It works differently in that the compression comes from the top ring of the PVC fitti

I've used jamb chucks successfully but want to expand my options but not pay the high price of commercial cole jaws. So, I've made my own 17' wood jaws to fit my vicmark chuck. Steps: 1. Cut plywood to the size desired. Do NOT cut into individual jaws. 2. Layout the center, 45, and 90 degree lines. 3. Position a set of metal jaws on the plywood and mark the hole positions. 4. Punch and drill holes for mounting to the chuck. Counter sink. 5. Mount plywood to the chuck base. 6. Using t

Super Nova 2 Wood Turning Chuck Introduction and Review

This video shows the un-boxing of a new Super Nova 2 Wood turning Chuck. I get it out of the box and describe the parts and show how to add the insert adapter and install new Jaws. I install 5 inch jaws on and an insert to fit my Jet 1642 lathe. Wood Turning Chucks are used to hold a piec on the lathe for turning. This is often a roughed out bowl blanks or a spindle turning for various projects. Make a tenon on the wood and then insert the turning blank in the Chuck for a secure hold. Simple Wood Faceplates For Perfect Balls Or Spheres
By: As Wood Turns
July 05, 2013 · 9,587 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com In my last video I turned a couple of wood balls to overcome a long running phobia - a concern that I could ever turn a perfect wood sphere. But I did it. One requirement was to have a process that I described in that video. However, part of the process required a set of wood faceplates. In this video, I show making one of these simple faceplates that are threaded to fit the tailstock live center and have a tenon with which to mount it to the headstock spindle. Either faceplate can go on either end of the lathe. This makes them interchangeable. My faceplates are made from poplar and left unfinished. These faceplates made ball turning simple. The last video in this series will take the process to an extreme. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next woodturning project video is ready.

Easy Wood Faceplates For Woodturning
By: As Wood Turns
February 01, 2013 · 126,168 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I've been using wood faceplates instead of metal faceplates with wood scrap blocks. A wood faceplate eliminates the risk of hitting a screw while turning. I can have as many wood faceplates as I want and keep it on the project until the project is complete. I can make any size faceplate that may be needed. In a recent video making a segmented bracelet, I used two wood faceplates to build up the segment layers from both top and bottom at once. For that project I also used a reverse chucking alignment adapter to hold one faceplate in the tail stock with the other mount

It uses 2 tapered end plugs, 8 tapered side slats, 2 automotive band clamps, 4 latex tubing rings, and a little duct tape. One end plug is fitted to the lathe spindle. As originally designed, I would have drilled a hole in the plug sized to a spur drive center. However, I decided to thread it to hold it more firmly in place. This is especially nice when assembling a bracelet onto the chuck. I used a t
