Texturing Techniques 1
By: Stewart Furini
November 24, 2018 · 1,050 views

Had to trim the original posting - this is a re-upload! There is no finished project at the end of this video. Instead, something a bit different - I've had a few questions about the Proxxon so I decided to do a video about some of the cutters you can use with it, and a bit about using a Dremel as well. This was a fun play time in the shed...but not all play, as it's given me some ideas for a few more platters I'll be taking to completion, I hope, in the near future. Anyway, for now, I hope this is interesting to somebody! Rotary Chisel - https://rotarychisel.com/ Carbide milling cutters -

Woodturning - An Armistice 100th Anniversary Project
By: William Hunt
November 07, 2018 · 3,387 views

This project is about tenacity. In this week in which we mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, I was reminded of the determination shown by the allied forces during WW1 and WW2 in defeating the Germans and their allies. I wanted to give up on this woodturning project several times but in spite of this, the outcome was a large, attractive bowl. William Hunt woodturner.

At Wood Turning Club this week I wanted to try to make a platter with a Stained Glass Windows effect. I turned a piece of mahogany into the right shape with the front being completely flat. Then using masking tape created the design I wanted. Using Rainbow Wood Stains to colour the segments, giving the piece an acrylic gloss finish buffed up to look just like glass.

Mutant Starfish Fossil Bowl
By: Stewart Furini
October 24, 2018 · 757 views

I had a vague idea of wood holding a fossil, but really I just wanted to play with my Dremel flex shaft. And so was born the mutant starfish fossil bowl...it's not without its faults that's for sure (an extra limb for a starfish for starters!) , but it's got me thinking...could that be dangerous?? This one won't be up for sale, that's for sure, but some of the techniques I've used will certainly feature on things I hope to sell. This is a prototype, a bit of fun and playing in the shed. Perhaps it will give someone an idea or encourage others to just 'have a go'...Cheers! Polishing compounds

Ebony & Ivory - Paul Howard Fluting Jig 15
By: William Hunt
October 19, 2018 · 713 views

This simple project served to get me back in the swing after a six week break away from the lathe. This Fluting/Router Jig project is 12' diameter, 2 1/2' ins deep dish that includes black and white milliput filling. Turned from Iroko. A few errors most of which were corrected. I used a 12.7mm (1/2') square router cutter which worked well for this project giving an almost equal spacing for the fluting and web in between, creating an abstract keyboard effect. Paul Howard’s Fluting Jig is an amazing addition to the woodturners tool kit and opens up all kinds of new turning opportunities. W

Woodturning a Milliput Mosaic Bowl
By: Jim Overton - Jimson's Stuff
September 28, 2018 · 3,014 views

This video was first published on my channel almost 3 years ago and showed how I coloured some Milliput turquoise to make some tiles for a mosaic design. I deleted the video a short time afterwards because I wasn't sure how safe the pigment I used was. I was asked at Makers Central 2018 by several people about what happened to this video as the bowl was on display at the show. As Milliput are now developing a turquoise putty, I thought it was about time I re-edited the old video and published it again so apologies if you have already seen it. Hopefully it will be new to many of you as I didn't

Woodturning - Water Color Splash Bowl
By: AgainsTheGrain
July 23, 2018 · 92 views

I attempted to create a water color look on this Oak bowl. This was completely experimental but sometimes it's nice to step out of your comfort zone and try something different. Apparently the camera wasn't recording while I was staining the inside of the bowl but no real mystery to what I did there. I am happy to answer any questions about the bowl. I am also looking for artist who would be interested in having their music featured in future videos. If you think your music would go well with my videos, please contact me. This is my 14th video following my learning experience with the Paul Howard Fluting/Router jig. William Hunt Woodturner. This project was about learning to make V flutes on the face of a project, a skill I need for for my next project. The design was jointly inspired by a shield crafted by Paul Howard which I saw at UKIWS last weekend and Stewart Furini’s amazing abilities with profiling and colours. I used a 12.7mm V Flute router cutter which worked well for this project giving an almost equal spacing for the fluting and web in between. I could have gone all the way with 72 flutes, but th

This is my 13th video following my learning experience with the Paul Howard Fluting/Router jig. William Hunt Woodturner. A more complex project with 60 flutes at 5mm thick, to complement to 5mm annular grooves on the reverse. Initially I finished the bowl in melamine lacquer, but stripped it off in favour of Hampshire Sheen microcrystaline wax as the lacquer looked too bright and artificial. Ive never turned Iroko before but I was pleased how it cut and finished, but there was a tendency to splinter a little under the router, or it may have been bad handling on my part. http://www.AsWoodTurns.com Our club challenged us to turn a box according to the style of Benoit Averly who demonstrated at the Utah Woodturning Symposium. His style included boxes with tall tapered lid bxtured and stained with a finial. But I still like to put my own stamp on a project. Instead of texturing the entire surface with carving, I used my pyrography gear. Instead of staining the entire surface, I opted for a variegated red, orange, yellow surface. My box is about 9 inches tall including the finial and about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Colors are red, yellow, and black alcohol dyes

This is my 12th video following my learning experience with the Paul Howard Fluting/Router jig. William Hunt Woodturner. A simple project this week, a double walled fluted box in Oak & Apple, a test piece for something more exotic in the near future. A similar piece by Dwight Rutherford, of Roseville California inspired me to do this. I wanted to turn this practice piece before embarking on something more complex with more valuable wood. I used a 12.7mm core box router cutter which worked well for this project giving an almost equal spacing for the fluting and web in between. This was originally a background project, the outcome of which was not expected to be worthy of a video. However, I was wrong and I was both surprised and pleased with the project. Woodturning Dye Practice - A Juicy Apple

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com Part of my childhood was spend on a fruit farm. We grew a lot of apples - mostly red ones. For this project, I decided to turn an apple. Too bad it is from maple wood. One tool that makes it easier is a screw chuck provided by Bert Desilse of Alberta, Canada. It is a metal piece that it held in place by standard chuck jaws. It contains a replaceable square drive screw that is held in place by a square drive bit. A very nice design. For color, I used alcohol based red, green, and yellow dyes applied with cue tips and a Richeson atomizer. I sanded back much of the dye to blend it together and allow a mottled final color. When completed, I sprayed it with rattle can lacquer. Enjoy! Blog: http://www.AsWoodTurns.com FB: http://www.Facebook.com/AsWoodTurns Music: Traumerei by Shumann performed by Becky Schlappi. This is my 9th video following my learning experience with the Paul Howard Fluting/Router jig. I suddenly felt I have made some significant progress in the last two videos, so I’m rolling… This project started of with a Yew blank, but it went airborne on me due to over tightening of the inserts on the O’Donnell jaws. Never mind I can use it for something else. I found a nice replacement Bur Sweet Chestnut blank which was actually better suited to the project The project turned out better than I had hoped for, but I have to pay more attention and ensure there is a uniform thickness of the piece before engaging with the router. In this video I, woodturner William Hunt turn a small bowl from sycamore, finish it with metallic acrylic paints, then cut 14 x 3.2mm flutes along the bowl using the router jig. This project is a kind of trial and exploration task chasing the elusive wood-turned latticework. I wanted to see how the router jig moved free-hand over the table and also if the idea of an internal spigot worked OK. I had to bling up the rather boring piece of off-the-shelf sycamore. I chose metallic acrylic paints for three reasons: - They look pretty cool when blended together. - Any damage caused by the guide

Paul Howard Fluting/Router Jig 3 - A Fluted Sycamore Platter
By: William Hunt
March 23, 2018 · 2,287 views

In this third video featuring Paul Howard's Fluting Jig, I have a go at decorating a sycamore platter with some arc fluting. I discovered that faceplate work with the router is somewhat easier than spindle work. The sycamore was a little spalted which made the wood more attractive than it would be normally, so I opted for some translucent colouring so not to lose the grain and spalting. Not quite a perfect result but a keeper! Paul Howards web presence: https://www.paulhowardwoodturner.co.uk

H F Bowern Designs Ash bowl resin and powders

Welcome Back! This piece was inspired by Martin Saban- Smith use of cogwheels in his Steampunk work and a local Ontario woodturner Dave Bell who combines wood with resins to create not only fabulous pieces of wood art, but blanks for peppermills, bottle stoppers and pens. Yes, I have started down the very slippery slop of adding resin to woodturning. ……Beam me up Scotty!! In this video I have a small bowl blank, 8 1 /4” in diameter and approx. 2 inches thick, of Ash, which I turned and cut a recess to fill with a combination of ArtResin and Pearl Ex pigment powders. #2 Release the Crackle... Paint
By: Tony Walters
March 08, 2018 · 58 views

So I decided to have a rummage through my wife's craft drawer to see what I could put on a bowl. I came across some crackle paint. My last adventure with a bowl and crackle paint was fairly unsuccessful with minimal cracking after several attempts. The crackle varnish suggests that any paint can be used, however I think the acrylic paint I used was too stretchy and so this time I used chalk paint. Chalk paint is fairly brittle so cracked very nicely but was very matte. Upon addition of a varnish topcoat the black chalk paint became very glossy so overall I'm really pleased. In these videos I

Shades of Grey

After a comment asking for a black and white rim, I've been mulling over some ideas. This one is more greys, though. White spirit stain doesn't stain light wood white - it just makes other stains lighter. There might be a black and white painted rim some other time. But for now, here's what I've managed with spirt stains. Chestnut Products - spirit stains, cut n polish, acrylic sanding sealer. Monday and Tuesday have been great, with the latter outshining the former by far. Monday was mostly consumed with pouring colour bottles and then admin (yawn!), but today was spent with George Foweraker RPT and a load of colour experimentation! Had a thoroughly enjoyable day....so thank you for coming today, and for your company, George. I look forward to seeing how you continue to use the colours. ********************************** Visit my website for Hampshire Sheen, Intrinsic Colours, Witty Turner's Clothing and Gifts, Hints and Tips: http://www.msabansmith.com ************************

#31 Basket Weave Illusion Effect
By: Andrew Whale
September 22, 2017 · 34,582 views

The Basket Weave Illusion Effect Hi This is my first attempt at trying out the basket weave illusion effect - applied to a small platter. As a regular reader of Woodturning magazine, I was intrigued and inspired to have a go at this after seeing an article featuring Michael Alguire, who uses this technique. This is by far the most complex and time-consuming project I have undertaken so far. I am really pleased I gave it a try and I am extremely happy with the result. I will definitely apply this technique on other projects but I am not sure I would undertake such a lengthy project again! M

A full colour platter this time! Chestnut Spirit Stains put on with an airbrush. The advantage of colouring the whole platter is that I don't need to cut out the centre after the rim has been done. When when it has dried enough in 3 months, I will take it out of the bag and go ahead and do what I was trying to explain in this video. Mainly, glue the branch or branches in place and look for cracks and glue them with powdered fillers and CA.... Jerry www.woodturnerstools.com

However, it has a crack where the rim would be and several knots. Why not try to fill the cracks with lead free solder? And, why not try some color blending to liven up the top sided. And why not an oversized rim to emphasize the color. Well, my soldering abilities were sorely tested by the cracks. But the color turned out nicely despite having to waste off that beautiful wide rim. The biggest

March 09, 2017 · 2,026 views

Hi I hope you like my new video. I was wanting to produce something using both texturing and Milliput techniques - so I made this bowl. At one stage I thought it would turn out to be a total disaster, but I'm now very pleased with the result. However it's not really practical as a bowl! I've found that spending just 5 minutes sharpening my tools before starting on the lathe can make a huge difference in te

#10 Woodturning - Making a Dyed Bowl [Ash]
By: PolishWoodturner
August 15, 2016 · 1,337 views

That bowl has a long story. It all started on June. Ash tree next to our house collapsed. It damaged power line. We had no electrocity for over two days. Easy? No way. Without the eletricity, we had no warm water, no light, no heat and after two days we got some issues with water (pump didn't work). That clearly shows how addicted to electricity we are. One old tree and 3 broken wires were enough to freeze our everyday life... ...but that really doesn't matter because now I have a lot of ash wood for woodturning!!! Do this on a non inductive top like wood and also stand farther away from this than the distance inward from it. Disclaimer: I am doing this at my own risk and I take no responsibility for any harm that anyone does to themselves trying this. If someone hurts/ kills themselves doing this I take no responsibility. You have been warned, and try this at your own risk!

The harder part then is to apply a rattle can clear lacquer and wet sand between every 6 to 10 coats. I've made it thru 220 grit wet

May 05, 2015 · 593 views

Well finally I have finished the mahogany bowl. I added a walnut inlay to the top and then sand it up and with several coats of Doctor's Workshop - Walnut Oil and wax. This was a humbling experience to try and figure out carving and then how to incorporate it on a bowl. What I have learned is I have a long way to go to becoming a carver and also one who can add carvings to turnings. Life is about new experiences and the learning will never stop. In my travels on researching carving on turnings, I found a great turner who also does carving. His name is Cyrus Fillmore. If you are interested in

Carving on a bowl, Part 2 Carving and texturing

April 08, 2015 · 1,599 views

In this episode of carving on a bowl, I take the bowl from where we had left it and do some addition carving and texturing to the bottom and top sections of the spaceship like bowl. I discuss some good resources for anyone interested in taking up carving or that are interested in just see what it is all about. Also, I show the use of a 'Lathe Chuck/Face-Plate Adapter' that allows you to mount your woodturning onto a carving vise or, as in my case, directly to the banjo of the lathe. This device allows you to carve your turning without taking the turning off the chuck. I got mine from Lee Va

Well it's been longer than a week, but after 2 1//2 months I am going back to the workshop. This week I am going to get a bowl ready for some carving. I have a great book by Chris Pye entitled ' Carving on Turning' which shows you how to add a carving element to your turning. Also in the March 2015 'Woodturning' magazine from the UK, Neil Scobie has an article on 'Making Texture Rim Bowls' from which I took the shape of my project. So off we go, using a 9' round x 2 7/8' deep Mahogany bowl blank to make the bowl. As sometimes happens, a design change enters the picture, but I manage to ge
