Shades of Grey
By: Stewart Furini
December 10, 2017 · 564 views

After a comment asking for a black and white rim, I've been mulling over some ideas. This one is more greys, though. White spirit stain doesn't stain light wood white - it just makes other stains lighter. There might be a black and white painted rim some other time. But for now, here's what I've managed with spirt stains. Chestnut Products - spirit stains, cut n polish, acrylic sanding sealer. Hycote car lacquer.

Faux Lapis Lazuli Effect

Another tealight holder...black, blue and gold this time...sort of like lapis lazuli...plenty of mistakes and retries on this one! Too much gold paint, bad texturing idea, but got there in the end! Chestnut spirit stains, acrylic paint and gloss lacquer finished with Chestnut burnishing cream.

Burr Elm Platter

November 18, 2017 · 674 views

Another video without any colouring! Well, without any colouring I've added...as this piece of wood is just gorgeous as it is. It's a piece of elm burr from Jon Dempsey - thanks, Jon! The challenge was the piece was quite thin to begin with and had a rather large crack running through it. Sanded to 400 grit and finished with several coats of Chestnut Finishing Oil.

Monday and Tuesday have been great, with the latter outshining the former by far. Monday was mostly consumed with pouring colour bottles and then admin (yawn!), but today was spent with George Foweraker RPT and a load of colour experimentation! I look forward to seeing how you continue to use the colours. ********************************** Visit my website for Hampshire Sheen, Intrinsic Colours, Witty Turner's Clothing and Gifts, Hints and Tips: http://www.msabansmith.com ************************

#31 Basket Weave Illusion Effect
By: Andrew Whale
September 22, 2017 · 17,877 views

The Basket Weave Illusion Effect Hi This is my first attempt at trying out the basket weave illusion effect - applied to a small platter. As a regular reader of Woodturning magazine, I was intrigued and inspired to have a go at this after seeing an article featuring Michael Alguire, who uses this technique. This is by far the most complex and time-consuming project I have undertaken so far. I am really pleased I gave it a try and I am extremely happy with the result. I will definitely apply this technique on other projects but I am not sure I would undertake such a lengthy project again! M

Orange Splodge and Splatter Platter
By: Stewart Furini

A full colour platter this time! Chestnut Spirit Stains put on with an airbrush. The advantage of colouring the whole platter is that I don't need to cut out the centre after the rim has been done. It also means I can make a larger usable area inside the platter. The footage of the decoration comes from a demo I did at West Sussex Woodturners. I'm just pointing out how I use branches to fill in larger voids instead of just putting in coffee grounds, wood chips, real and fake turquoise or all the other fillers on the market. In this case, the tree this blank came from was alive last week, turned and cored 4 days later. When when it has dried enough in 3 months, I will take it out of the bag and go ahead and do what I was trying to explain in this video. Mainly, glue the branch or branches in place and look for cracks and glue them with powdered fillers and CA.... Jerry www.woodturnerstools.com

Coloured Glass Effect Rim

A new technique inspired by a photograph of a piece of coloured glass work - a combination of a rough radial pattern, splodging and splattering. Dyed, Diet Bowl - aka Experimental Whoops
By: As Wood Turns
June 02, 2017 · 2,498 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com With all the ideas from the Utah Woodturning Symposium, it's time to implement some of them with this project. The wood is the remaining pine slab from a previous project. However, it has a crack where the rim would be and several knots. Why not try to fill the cracks with lead free solder? And, why not try some color blending to liven up the top sided. And why not an oversized rim to emphasize the color. Well, my soldering abilities were sorely tested by the cracks. But the color turned out nicely despite having to waste off that beautiful wide rim. The biggest

#23 Pewter Rimmed Spalted Beech Bowl

May 21, 2017 · 1,484 views

Hi This is my first attempt at turning a pewter rimmed bowl. I was inspired to have a go at this after watching a video by Bram the Wadesmill Woodturner. He created a great looking pewter rimmed bowl. His YouTube channel is: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEHcSv7-eoRVkyyksXsnrBA My video focusses on the method and making of the pewter rim, rather that the turning of the bowl. During the making of the pewter rim I suffered a really bad catch. I then used a glove on my left hand which, in hindsight, wasn't good practice. As such, please do not copy me. I hope you like the bowl and find this

Check out Jim's channel (Jimson's Stuff) at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6h82LH3PtdiSHaj_7f09Fg The aluminium material was created by mixing epoxy resin with aluminium powder. I encountered numerous air holes in the aluminium when sanding, and it took ages to fill and re-sand. I will think twice before using this method again and any advice on alternative methods would be welcome. For the coloured pattern I used 3mm opaque acrylic. Next time I w

At one stage I thought it would turn out to be a total disaster, but I'm now very pleased with the result. However it's not really practical as a bowl! I'm starting to gain a lot of confidence with the bowl gouge and I love it when the wood comes off in streams. Apart from lots of practice, I've learned that it is vital to have sharp tools. I've found that spending just 5 minutes sharpening my tools before starting on the lathe can make a huge difference in te

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com Happy New Year. I started work on this poplar dish to prepare for a airbrush workshop taught by Jay Shepherd at Williamette Valley Woodturners. The poplar is approximately 9' diameter and 2' tall. Initially, I finished it with shellac friction polish to seal the wood. Then at Jay Shepherd's workshop, he recommended that I paint only the interior of the dish with an iridescent brown acrylic paint with my airbrush. That part was easy. The harder part then is to apply a rattle can clear lacquer and wet sand between every 6 to 10 coats. I've made it thru 220 grit wet

In my travels on researching carving on turnings, I found a great turner who also does carving. His name is Cyrus Fillmore. If you are interested in
