Shades of Grey
By: Stewart Furini
December 10, 2017 · 657 views

After a comment asking for a black and white rim, I've been mulling over some ideas. This one is more greys, though. White spirit stain doesn't stain light wood white - it just makes other stains lighter. There might be a black and white painted rim some other time. But for now, here's what I've managed with spirt stains. Chestnut Products - spirit stains, cut n polish, acrylic sanding sealer. Hycote car lacquer. - - - - - - Please watch: 'Hot Pink Crackle Rim' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v Lg--XGuvP8s - - - - - -

Another tealight holder...black, blue and gold this time...sort of like lapis lazuli...plenty of mistakes and retries on this one! Too much gold paint, bad texturing idea, but got there in the end! Chestnut spirit stains, acrylic paint and gloss lacquer finished with Chestnut burnishing cream. - - - - - - Please watch: 'Hot Pink Crackle Rim' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v Lg--XGuvP8s - - - - - -

Burr Elm Platter
By: Stewart Furini
November 18, 2017 · 931 views

Another video without any colouring! Well, without any colouring I've added...as this piece of wood is just gorgeous as it is. It's a piece of elm burr from Jon Dempsey - thanks, Jon! The challenge was the piece was quite thin to begin with and had a rather large crack running through it. Sanded to 400 grit and finished with several coats of Chestnut Finishing Oil. - - - - - - Please watch: 'Hot Pink Crackle Rim' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v Lg--XGuvP8s - - - - - -

Textured and coloured platter rim - texture made with a Robert Sorby texturing tool - Chestnut spirit stains - Chestnut sanding sealer, lacquer and cut 'n' polish. This one was partly inspired by a platter made by Ed Oliver - thanks, Ed! Ed used Golden Artist Colours on his platter, which he sells in his shop, not Jo Sonya colours as I say in the video. Like, share and subscribe! Comments always welcome. https://chestnutproducts.co.uk/ I use Chestnut's spirit stains, acrylic sanding sealer, Cut 'n' Polish abrasive wax, and abrasive pads. Orange Splodge and Splatter Platter
By: Stewart Furini
September 10, 2017 · 412 views

A full colour platter this time! Chestnut Spirit Stains put on with an airbrush. The advantage of colouring the whole platter is that I don't need to cut out the centre after the rim has been done. It also means I can make a larger usable area inside the platter. The footage of the decoration comes from a demo I did at West Sussex Woodturners. Bonus footage of my camera and sound set-up at the end too! Coloured Glass Effect Rim
By: Stewart Furini
July 25, 2017 · 636 views

A new technique inspired by a photograph of a piece of coloured glass work - a combination of a rough radial pattern, splodging and splattering. The sealer used on the first example was applied a bit too soon and washed out a bit of the colour so it would have been better to have waited a while before applying it. Finishing an Elm Bowl - Take 2
By: Steve Lindsley
January 18, 2015 · 4,052 views

In this video I finish an elm bowl that I tried to finish a few months ago. At that time the bowl had a mind of it's own and decided to jump off of the lathe. That was the subject of my 'Lathe Mishap' video. This time I was successful and everything worked out fine. In addition to the elm bowl I finished up a maple bowl that had been collecting dust on my work table for over a year. I decided to use some dye on both projects. Some of you will disagree with coloring over the natural beauty of the wood and for the most part I agree with that. But on these projects I think it enhanced their overall look particularly the maple piece which was pretty nondescript. I hope you enjoy the video. Comments are always welcome,
