Eccentric Bottle Stopper With Infinite Axis Chuck
By: As Wood Turns
October 14, 2016 · 4,167 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com A local club asked me to demonstrate turning a bottlestopper. But, I cannot make myself make a plain one when I can dress it up by turnning it on my Infinite Axis Chuck. This wood is walnut finished with shellac friction polish. It was turned using three skew axes in addition to the principal turning axis. Then with a lot of sanding, it is truely unique. I revised the Infinite Axis Chuck to have a screw mount for bottlestoppers. This was its maiden voyage. It passed the test. I'll release a build video with the revisions shortly. Good turning. Woodturning Natural Edge Off Center Bowl
By: As Wood Turns
August 19, 2016 · 2,838 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com After seeing a demo at a woodturning club of a large off center bowl, I had to try one myself. At another club meeting, I picked up a bowl blank that I thought was elm. The blank had bark on one side - not the normal position for a natural edge bowl. But why not combine a side natural edge and an off center bowl. Well, here it is. The rim measures about seven inches in diameter; the bowl is about two inches tall. To summarize the process: 1. Mark the center of the blank and an offset center. For the bark edge, I shifted the offset center about 3/4' towards the bark

Woodturning Box Lid with Multiple Eccentric Axes For Unique Look
By: As Wood Turns
July 22, 2016 · 2,435 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com In the last video I turned a set of stacking boxes. My boxes need an interesting lid for the top most box - one that will provide interest and enhance the boxes. The Infinite Axis Chuck provides a solution. The lid is red oak finished with walnut oil then buffed. The oak was shaped initially with standard techniques with one important feature. I cut a mortise on the underside to serve as an expansion hold while the top side was tooled. This mortise later served as the gluing surface to mount the wood to the Inifinite Axis Chuck. The tail stock provides a clear indi

Eccentric Spindle Woodturning With Infinite Axis Chuck
By: As Wood Turns
June 17, 2016 · 3,276 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com Since adapting the egg chuck into an Infinite Axis Chuck, I wanted to explore other ways that it can be used. Egg Chuck Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v 3VHZgrkwugY Video Making Egg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v VC1RbHQkU3Q I used hot melt glue to fasten his piece of elm to the chuck's tenon. Then working from the top down, I turned a series of coves and adjusted the axis a little bit with each cove. Each adjustment moved the axis between 90 and 120 degrees and increased offset from the original axis. The finish is friction polish buffed. This turning has no resemblance and no useful purpose. That means it must be pure art. Good turning. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next easy woodturning project video is ready. Woodturning Jewelry With Infinite Axis Chuck

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com In this video, I adapt the egg chuck I demonstrated about a year ago. Instead of an egg, I turned a ball and socket tenon to fit the chuck. Then I used this new Infinite Axis chuck to turn a jewelry brooch or pin. Egg Chuck Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v 3VHZgrkwugY Video Making Egg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v VC1RbHQkU3Q The pin is glued up from maple, walnut, honey locust, and padauk finished with friction polish. The brooch has three features requiring a skew axis. Often in eccentric turning, the wood is shifted on a faceplate to cut in a feature. Thi

Woodturning Jewelry - Multi-Axis Necklace or Brooch

June 03, 2016 · 5,174 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com In this video, I'm trying out another project from the 2016 Utah Woodturning Symposium. Again, I credit Linda Ferber. These are thin wood disks with decorations like buttons turned on the face. To turn these buttons, I used a very cheap, easily made chuck to fit my usual chuck. The chuck tilts the turning axis away from parallel. This gives the turning a unique look. I turned a chunk of cedar round with dove tail tenons on both ends. Then at a chop saw, I clamped the wood to the saw and sawed a 20 degree cut. Then adjusted the cut to 10 degrees and trimmed the wood

Woodturning: Adjusting Eccentric Turning Depth in a 4 minus 2 Jaw Chuck
By: Jerry Paul
November 30, 2015 · 1,166 views

The other day, one of my favourite youtube woodturners, Al Furtado, 'The Rebel Woodturner' gave me a fantastic shout out in regards to the method I came up with to turn an eccentric piece. Thank you Al!! (I'm still puffed up like a peacock about that!!) But! He also issued a bit of a challenge. ... I think this video may be the answer to that. :) In this video, I show that I can also adjust the depth of the eccentric turning, using the jaws on my chuck, although not with as much precision as with Al's eccentric jig.

I think it was Mark Twain who said something to the effect of - 'You should hire a lazy man because he'll always find an easier way to get the job done.' Personally, I have yet to see someone turning an eccentric piece this way. It worked pretty good for me, although some may see this as being un-safe. DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU FEEL IT MAY BE UN-SAFE!!!

Woodturning An Eccentric Or Multi Axis Bud Vase
By: As Wood Turns
August 14, 2015 · 3,343 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com This bud vase is spalted birch harvested about a year ago. It is an eccentric turning on four axes: Main and offset by 3/8 inch at 120 degree intervals. A year ago, I rough turned it round and waxed it. It has been laying around my shop since then. It is about five inches tall and two inches in diameter, finished with beeswax and mineral oil followed by buffing. Initially, I envisioned it taller with a neck about three inches longer. But when it neared completion, it did not look right -- so I turned off the neck. Much better without. I turned two coves on two offset axes followed by a large bead on the final offset axis. It was fun. Good turning. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next easy woodturning project video is ready. Multi Axis Woodturning All My Scoops
By: As Wood Turns
July 30, 2015 · 2,677 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com To complete my video series on wood scoops, I turned this cedar scoop about 7 inches long and 2 inches diameter, finished with beeswax and mineral oil. The turning axes were: 1. The original center of the wood for the scoop. 2. A skewed axis for the handle. 3. The original axis for the end of the handle. One safety note: I used hot melt glue to fasten the scoop to a piece of scrap before sawing the scoop. I did not wnat the round scoop turning at the saw. I love the finished look and feel of these three cedar scoops. I can improve each, I'm sure, but that's for the future. The cedar feels crisp and light and sounds nice when two are gently hit together. Good turning. Woodturning An Eccentric Scary Halloween Spider
By: As Wood Turns
October 25, 2013 · 2,168 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I had a big problem coming up with a Halloween project. My wife came to my rescue suggesting a spider. This spider is an eccentric turning. Offsetting the tail end by nearly a half an inch flattened my pet spider's bottom side so he will not sit high off the ground. I left him unsanded and unfinished wet juniper, appropriate for a rough, scary creature. Easy DIY System For Eccentric Spindle Turning
By: As Wood Turns
August 20, 2013 · 3,164 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com In this video, I'm going into greater detail on the faceplates and system used in making the doubly eccentric magic wand. The system consists of 2 faceplates, 4 brass pins, and some plastic countertop laminate. With the system, I can exactly index most eccentric spindle turnings that use a tail stock. Although I made these faceplates for magic wands, now I can many, many other uses to make repeatable successful eccentric turnings. How to Turn a Double Eccentric Magic Wand
By: As Wood Turns
August 16, 2013 · 4,256 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com In this video, I'm going another step beyond in eccentric turning. Building on a viewer suggestion to use masking tape to enable power transmission while backing off the pressure between tailstock and headstock. I made a pair of threaded faceplates in which I drilled holes to provide regular offsets. Corresponding holes would then be drilled into the workpiece. Brass rods, inserted between the workpiece and the faceplate would offset and drive the spindle. It worked! A double (offset both ends) magic wand. Double the eccentricity, double the magic, and double the power. This full sized 15' long wand is made from walnut and red oak. It is finished with mineral oil and beeswax. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next woodturning project video is ready.

How To Turn An Eccentric (Crooked) Magic Wand
By: As Wood Turns
August 09, 2013 · 6,391 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com After the last video, I decided to go one step further and make an eccentric blade for another wand. By using multiple axes, the blade will be crooked, a special twist to please any wizard. This full sized 17' long wand is made from walnut and red oak. It is finished with mineral oil and beeswax. A chamber in the handle can hold a magical phoenix feather. This blade is more difficult than the last wand. Between the thin blade flexing and the off axis turning, there's a lot of chatter that also complicates this turning. I'll list any woodturning curses that viewers suggest. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next woodturning project video is ready.

Risky Turning - Deceptive Off Center Duck
By: As Wood Turns
July 12, 2013 · 10,551 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I am interested in multi-axis and off center turning. However, any change to the turning axis presents challenges and risks. This project, from hard maple, follows an example in 'Woodturning Methods' by Mike Darlow. On the first axis, I turned the body, foot, and a mounting disk. Then I mounted a wood faceplate with a 2' hole offset from the center by a little less than 2/3 of an inch. I drove screws into the mounting disk inside the radius of the duck's foot. Then on the second axis, I turn the duck's head and neck. The greatest challenge is the transition between the duck's neck and body. The biggest risk is while doing the head and neck -- the body is flipping around the axis -- a risk to hands and tool positioning. My little ducky is yet unnamed. Your suggestions will be appreciated. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next woodturning project video is ready.

The stem is 2x2' maple about 6' long. I started turning with the axis running almost corner to corner. Then as I finished a bead, I changed the axis. The result is a little guess and by gosh but I tried to keep the main stem somewhat in line as it comes up thru the beads. I sanded each groove as I completed it as I'm sure I could never reposition the wood back into that same position. I used a long stri

Segmented Tea Light - More Safe Than Eccentric
By: As Wood Turns
May 31, 2013 · 9,832 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com Rather than respond to the challenge of an eccentric tea light, I choose to turn a open segmented tea light with a bonus saucer to set it on. The style of segmentation is called open segment meaning that there are gaps between the segments making up the ring. However, nearly every open segment requires a couple of closed segment rings for a top and/or bottom. Closed segment is where there are no gaps between the segments. This tea light has a base of solid walnut; 6 open segment rings of walnut each containing 18 segments; and 1 closed segment ring of maple containing 12 segments. There is a total of 121 pieces. It is finished with walnut oil. The saucer has a base of solid walnut and 1 closed segment ring of 12 segments for a total of 13 pieces. Together there are 134 pieces. The saucer is finished with walnut oil. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next woodturning project video is ready.

Multiple Axes Turning - Two Axes
By: charlieb1946
January 28, 2013 · 3,139 views

Turning on a single axis and turning a single profile is what you think of when you think of a turned piece - ROUND & BROWN. But the lathe is capable of MUCH MORE! It does require a change in thinking. While a lathe has only ONE axis, your piece of wood has an infinite number of AXES - an infinite number of ways to mount it between centers on your lathe - and turn it sequentially on each one if you choose. THAT is what this video is about - MULTIPLE AXES TURNING. While this video only covers TWO AXES funadmental concepts of BETWEEN CENTERS MULTIPLE AXES TURNING, the concepts are applicable to other between centers multiple axes turning. I plan to do similar videos on the fundamental concepts behind three other types of Multiple Axes Turning - specially - Multiple Axes Therming / Split / Inside Out Turning - Muliple Axes Face Plate Turning - Multiple Axes Chucked Turning

Reverse Engineering a Multi Axes Turning
By: charlieb1946
May 01, 2012 · 425 views

While multi axes turned pieces can be fascinating to look at, figuring out how they were actually turned on a lathe can be baffling. This video demonstrates one method of starting with a photograph of a multi axes piece (turned by Peter Rand) and using Google's free SketchUp app, answer the HOW'D HE DO DAT? question. The details of the method used to reverse engineer this piece is available at http://tinyurl.com/6w7g4fm

For woodturners, multi-axis turning offers a means to go beyond just ROUND. And one of the things multi-axis turning opens up is to play with ARCS - intersecting arcs - and - TWISTS (up to a quarter turn twist) BUT - multi-axis turning is a bit trickier to connect CAUSE to EFFECT and as a result, OUTCOMES can be difficult to predict. What you WANTED and what you ACTUALLY turn can be quite different. Well - lucky for us, Barbara Dill has been working on bringing a bit of Order To Multi-Axis Turning's CHAOS. And even luckier for us, she's written to very helpful papers on both the concepts
