It Popped Right Off (and darn near hit me in the face) ·

I really need to get a proper face shield. Thanks to a couple of donations I received recently, I'll be able to get one soon. :) Thankfully I got myself out of the way this time. Next time I may not be so lucky. There were a few mistakes that I made that I can now see in hindsight, but hindsight won't keep you from getting wood in the face! ... It didn't hit me, but it came close. What happens when you rush in work - woodturning ·
By: Jake Gevorgian
February 02, 2017 · 4,754 views

The video shows how can a tool catch destroy the piece due to the wrong working phase. Conclusion The wood was a spalted beechwood that has hard and soft fibers due to spalting. The catch presented a very strong blow to the soft aspect of the wood and broke it. The correct way of shaping the opening of this lid would have been progressive light cuts with the use of smaller chisels. The thickness of the mortise walls are also a big factor—if the mortise walls were thicker, then it would withstand the blow shown in this catch. Dangers are unforeseeable, therefore wearing face and headtop shields are necessary while operating lathe machine.

Even as I post this video I'm still a little rattled by it. I have done several large outboard turnings with no issues, but this one fought back. I really want a bigger lathe, partly so I can inboard turn these bigger pieces but also so I can run at a lower speed. The lathe was at its lowest setting which is still 700rpm. I had grand hopes for it. But the bark inclusion that I was counting on to enhance the bowl actually extended thru almost the entire blank.
