Who Uses the Safety Guard on a Wood Lathe?
By: Mike Peace Woodturning
November 06, 2018 · 3,296 views

I demonstrate using the safety guard on my Powermatic 3520 that many woodturners scrap. I demonstrate how it has little impact on any aspect of turning a bowl as I turn the outside of a severely cracked rough turned cherry bowl. I sand the outside and texture and turn the inside without difficulty. If you have a safety cage on your lathe, you might try using it on a hazardous turning due to cracks, voids or an imbalance. Turn Talk #5 - Shop Safety PSA
By: Billy Burt
November 05, 2018 · 128 views

I decided to call this particular series Turn Talk. Here I will discuss various turning topics that aren't really quick tips, not shop updates and not turning projects. In this episode I talk about shop safety. Failing to properly protect yourself is dangerous. You can lose appendages and worse by being careless and ignoring established safety procedures and practices. Safety should be a habit! If you have questions about anything you've seen me do, ask away. I have pretty thick skin and am not easily offended. I do my best to respond to every comment and question. Questions? It Popped Right Off (and darn near hit me in the face)

I really need to get a proper face shield. Thanks to a couple of donations I received recently, I'll be able to get one soon. :) Thankfully I got myself out of the way this time. Next time I may not be so lucky. There were a few mistakes that I made that I can now see in hindsight, but hindsight won't keep you from getting wood in the face! ... It didn't hit me, but it came close. What happens when you rush in work - woodturning
By: Jake Gevorgian
February 02, 2017 · 5,254 views

The video shows how can a tool catch destroy the piece due to the wrong working phase. Conclusion The wood was a spalted beechwood that has hard and soft fibers due to spalting. The catch presented a very strong blow to the soft aspect of the wood and broke it. The correct way of shaping the opening of this lid would have been progressive light cuts with the use of smaller chisels. The thickness of the mortise walls are also a big factor—if the mortise walls were thicker, then it would withstand the blow shown in this catch. Dangers are unforeseeable, therefore wearing face and headtop shields are necessary while operating lathe machine.

The Perils of Outboard Turning

Even as I post this video I'm still a little rattled by it. I have done several large outboard turnings with no issues, but this one fought back. I really want a bigger lathe, partly so I can inboard turn these bigger pieces but also so I can run at a lower speed. The lathe was at its lowest setting which is still 700rpm. Woodturning Hollow Vessel - Segmented For Safety

Once you understand how, then you also begin to understand the risks involved especially for larger projects. They then require specialized tools such as bent scrapers. Even then a high skill level is required to avoid serious catches that could destroy the project. A catch could also do physical damage to the woodturner's elbow or shoulder. I also like segmented vessels, they have a different look and appeal. So why not combine segmented and h

http://www.aswoodturns.com Sometimes, we need a reminder of the risks involved in woodturning projects, particularly when turning a bowl harvested from random sources, sometimes called urban forestry. I harvest wood where ever I can, hoping for a big turning blank and fantastic grain and figure. This apricot wood blank was from the main trunk, one of the biggest pieces from the tree. I had grand hopes for it. But the bark inclusion that I was counting on to enhance the bowl actually extended thru almost the entire blank. Many years ago two limbs were growing almost parallel for many years. Mo

Why you don't use a Spindle Roughing Gouge on bowls.
By: Ian Robbo Robertson
October 11, 2011 · 240,765 views

DO NOT USE A SPINDLE ROUGHING GOUGE ON BOWLS. My name is Ian Robertson (Robbo) and I have been a production woodturner for 30 years. It is how I make my living turning everything from huge posts to tiny eave finials and everything between and my safety record is impeccable. Our business has never had a lost time incident and we still have all our fingers. This video was made because of a discussion about using a Spindle Roughing Gouge on a bowl on the Woodworking Forums in Australia.
