#10 Sorby toolpost review
By: Tony Walters
May 08, 2018 · 38 views

In these videos I aim to show skills that I am learning in woodturning and provide a brief update on my challenges with anxiety. Woodturning has long been used to escape from the world and provide creative relaxation. If you want to join me on this journey then please 'like' and 'subscribe' to keep up to date with my projects and videos. As a novice turner I am still learning skills, so take whatever I do with a pinch of salt. Ultimately you are responsible for your safety, if you think something is unsafe then don't do it!

A New Tool Rest Under the Sun!!
By: RickTurns
November 08, 2017 · 7,352 views

The Double 9 D is a new style of tool rest...a single rod of 1' steel stamped into a shape with two 90 degree bends. I test it out on bowls and spindles. 1/5/17 - Joe just released a new video where he's using the Double 9 D to turn a bowl. Here's a link to that video: http://bit.ly/2E9xjJn Like all tools, the Double 9 D has its areas where it excels and areas where it doesn't; if you'd like to skip all the detail on what I tested, advance to position 16:26 in the video for my summary of the Double 9 D's good points. A bad day in the Workshop. I really wasn't in the correct frame of mind but wanted to get on with something on the lathe. First up deicded to turn a small snowman to practice turing the curves. After that went to try and do a spinning top which is where things went wrong. A catch which threw the skew into the chuck and forced it down to snap the tool rest. Also a preview of an upcoming project which invloves making a housing for some electronics I've put togetheer. Elizabeth has a new challenge with her turning club to turn a shallow bowl. What she plans on doing requires doing some outboard turning so I put together this tool rest for her. My first attempts was just bolting some angle iron to some roller stands, but that was just not stable enough. After some googling I found Sam Angelo's (WYOMINGWOODTURNER) cement and galvanized pipe tool rest and was inspired to created this rest. Make an easy locking cam
By: Rebel Turner Wood Art
May 07, 2016 · 9,772 views

Just finished building this Shop made steady rest with locking cam. The difference here is I made a cam for easy lock and steel arms I just need to make handles for the lock screws that lock the arms in position. The cam works like a charm and easy to get it on the bed way The idea behind this was not to have to use any tools to put it on the lathe . lock it down or make any adjustments. I have been thinking about this froe a while and thinking how I could make it work. I think this is a great design for those who want something with a little twist. DIY Welded Toolrest for Wood Mini-Lathe
By: Barry's Workshop
December 13, 2015 · 2,437 views

I got tired of the limits of the toolrest that came with my mini lathe so I welded a larger one using some scrap hot rolled angle and steel rod that I had left over from other projects. It's only a few inches wider (8.5' [22cm] vs. 6' [15cm]), but it makes a big difference in being able to turn larger work. I also didn't want to make it too big because my lathe's banjo only has 5/8' [16mm] shaft. Music by audionautix.com. Released under Creative Commons License 3.0.

Make a Stop Collar For Your Tool Rest
By: RickTurns
December 12, 2015 · 2,683 views

It's easy to make a stop collar for your tool rest post. Very few materials are required and it's fairly quick to turn. A stop collar slides on the post of the tool rest, and can be tightened at any position, allowing the tool rest to be removed and then put back at exactly the same height. I decided to slow the Time Lapse rate down and let you see a bit more detail of the process. Make a tool rest - part 6 - Brazing
By: RickTurns
March 19, 2015 · 7,126 views

In this sixth and final video in my series of videos about making a tool rest (without welding!), I braze the arm to the post, and then the wear strip to the arm. After cleaning up the new tool rest, I cut and adjust the height on the lathe. The manufacturer's video on using the oxy-mapp torch is here: https://youtu.be/a38PdQkcInA Jan 23 2016 - this just in! Lyle Jamieson passed on a suggestion to put a wedge of wood in the right angle of the angle iron, so that if the tool slips off the end (or even the lip) of the rest, you'll be less likely of catching a finger or two. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Update To My DIY Lathe Steady Rest
By: As Wood Turns
September 04, 2014 · 6,983 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I've been using my home made steady rest for over a year. During this time, I've thought of a couple of improvements: 1) Use locknuts in place of the nuts. Vibration in use caused nuts to come loose and fall off. 2) Replace the base that mounts it to the lathe so that I can place the tool rest closer to the project and the steady rest. Other than the nuts, replacing the base was the easy part. I still needed the steady to be adjustable so the key upgrade was a coupling assembly. This assembly enables the steady upright to be attached to the base but enables adjustmen

August 27, 2013 · 22,241 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com After using my new steady rest turning the travel mug, many viewer requested more information about the steady rest. So here we go. It's make from Baltic birch plywood with layers glued together as necessary for thickness. The wheels came from a pair of roller blades I purchased at a local thrift store. It works fine except I'd like to be able to more my tool rest closer when the steady is near the end of the workpiece. I think it can be much closer. But before I modify the base, I'd like your ideas. I used 1/4 inch hardware. I will be doubling the nuts to prevent them from loosening. I will appreciate all comments and suggestions for improvements. Thank you in advance. The M Spindle Steady Jig â ” Woodturning

Drawings are now available for download. Visit: http://www.paloarte.com/the-m-spindle-steady-jig-drawings-for-woodturners/ I took the basic concept from a gentleman named Richard who has a youtube channel, here http://youtu.be/tUwGqTyq68E After telling my father about this jig, as a structural engineer, he decided to make one for me. Thanks to my dad now I have a jig that can hold long spindles on the lathe without a tail stock. I've done several aggressive cuts on it and nothing moved, except that I pushed the jig a little back because the tool rest was vibrating and when it became loose I pushed it along with my aggressive cuts.

Crude spindle steady
By: Bob Hamilton
November 16, 2011 · 53,941 views

This is the crude spindle steady I made a few years ago and it works well enough that I have never bothered to change it. I don't use a steady very often and this one seems to do the job when I need it. These clips are excerpted from my tall, thin stemmed goblet video where they were edited out due to the length of the video.
