Preparing Green Apple Branch For Natural Edge Projects
By: As Wood Turns
April 26, 2019 · 2,529 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com In my Spring pruning, I cut a large limb from my apple tree. I hate to waste good wood, especially apple wood. However, apple is very likely to crack and split. So, it has to be treated. I decided to cut it into short pieces that could be used for boxes and similar projects. To prevent cracking, I chose to drill out the pith and center wood from each piece. After they dry, then I plan to remount them and make a variety of projects. However, I have fifteen pieces and not that many ideas to finish them. I will appreciate your suggestions for finishing these short pieces one they are dry. Enjoy! I just finished running an experiment and found that it doesn't work worth a darn until you add heat. I use a pressure cooker & have a 40 watt bulb inside. Gets it plenty warm, had a couple blocks (3 1/4' square by 6') green freshly cut ash dry in 4 days. Pulled off 2 or 3 cups of water.....amazing. Had to reapply vacuum 3 or 4 times daily since the water boiled off & was pulled out by the vacuum pump.....or my pressure cooker setup leaks. The v

Wood Contraction and Check and Cracking Prevention
By: Daniel Vilarino
December 12, 2014 · 14,883 views

Hi everyone! I got several pieces of wood that I brought back from my last trip to Uruguay. Some poplar, curupay, jatoba, catalpa and anacahuita. Most of them are still pretty green and will need some time to dry. And even the ones that are somehow dry run the risk of checking or cracking when the wood contracts due to the drying process. So, I found the need to protect them and delay or avoid these undesireable effects. I thought it would be a good idea to make a video showing the different methods that I have been applying in the past year or so, to avoid checking. I hope you enjoy the

May 05, 2014 · 2,800 views

It's Burls week here in the Wood shop. I was lucky enough to get a truck load of Plum Fruit Tree Burl wood. It is amazing, besides having a bunch of gnarly Burl wood It has nice purple streaks of grain. It is wet so I decided to try a new product called Pentracryl. In this video I take a wet Plum tree burl and cut it into small pieces to expose the figure. I then stabilize it using a product called Pentacryl which is a wood stabilizer product. I cut the burl into small pieces for wooden pen blanks.
