Stabilizing Wood for Wood Turners
By: Mike Peace Woodturning
February 02, 2018 · 7,585 views

I visit a friend’s shop to start on my first wood stabilizing project. Stabilizing wood allows you to harden punky wood to make it suitable for turning. This allows the use of spalted wood for threaded box projects and more. I upload a new wood turning tip every Tuesday and a wood turning tutorial video each and every Friday so Ya’ll come back, hear? Want to support my channel? Check out my Amazon shop https://www.amazon.com/shop/mikepeacewoodturning Disclaimer: If you click on one of the product links, I’ll receive a small commission. This helps support my channel and allows me to continue to make videos like this. Thank you for the support! You can download demonstration handouts, downloadable copies of articles I have published, and other useful woodturning information available on my website http://mikepeacewoodturning.blogspot.com/p/woodturning-resources.html

Wood Storage - Making progress organizing the workshop
By: Wood Frontier
January 31, 2018 · 92 views

A major goal for this year is cleaning up the workshop. In the corner, I have a messy pile of logs and wood that needs to be processed and put on the lathe. Most of it has been around for at least a year, so I really need to get through and rough turn as much as possible. I assembled the rack and proceeded to load up the logs. It's nice that I can actually see the raw material that I have available. It's been really cold in the garage, so it was nice to get a warm day where I could go out and get this done. The next piece I will be organizing will probably be the workbench. I need to get that cleared up so I can actually use it for like... working on. We just arrived back from Tasmania, where I picked up some timber for turning and other projects. We had a great relaxing time, touring over most of the state. I visited Morrison's Sawmill in Strahan and picked up some Huon Pine and Blackhearted Sassafras. Now we're all refreshed for the new year and all set to go. Haul of Fresh Cherry and Elm with Massive Elm Burl
By: Nathan Cumming
August 29, 2017 · 976 views

In this quick video I'll show you the haul of freshly cut Elm that I was able to acquire. Not only was I able to save a large amount of sizeable pieces of Elm from being firewood, I was also able to rescue an enormous burl that had grown around almost the entire trunk of the tree! Any comments as far as sealing the large burl would be greatly appreciated as I don't want it to crack while drying like my last pieces of Elm burl did. At this point i don't know if i should mill it into smaller pieces now to seal or seal as it. Please leave me a comment with your thoughts. I also show some piece

If you have never cut logs into blanks before or you just what to see my though process as I divide up the parts of the tree, then take a look.

Milling Spalted Firewood
By: Make Crazydays
July 16, 2015 · 4,080 views

This video covers how to mill up firewood into useful pieces for woodworking. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. – Ecclesiastes 3:11 http://make.crazydays.org/2015/07/milling-firewood/ I was inspired by some spalted maple firewood I spotted while at a tool sale. While I did pick up a grinder I also was that odd guy who asked to buy a couple handfuls of their firewood. The next day I milled up a piece of the firewood into a few usable pieces. This video outlines the process I used to turn the firewood into blanks for turning and a couple small boards. Bring Out The Purple In Your Purple Heart (Update)
By: RJBWoodTurner
January 20, 2014 · 16,216 views

After the first 'Bring Out The Purple In Your Purple Heart' video, I discovered that sanding right after applying the heat helped to bring out more of the purple color and gave an overall better looking pen blank. The heat was raising the grain giving a rougher less refined look. This second video talks about that issue and demonstrates the fix.

Bring Out The Purple In Your Purpleheart
By: RJBWoodTurner
January 13, 2014 · 37,782 views

This is a quick tip video describing what I do to bring out the color in my Purpleheart pen blanks. By using a torch, I can quickly oxidize the wood maximizing the color. A quick note: Don't hold the heat on the piece to long, it will burn, and I have found that I get the best results if I sand first then after burning I re-sand with the finer grits to remove any grain that raised during the process. You will notice some small specks of wood that come off on the paper towel as I am polishing, Sanding would have taken care of those and made a much smoother finished product. Regards, Bob

It is based on a spiritual attitude which reveres nature, and is grounded in truth to materials with the belief that to make a thing well is in itself an act of prayer.' by: Kevin Wallace The elegant vessels of Frank Cummings are vastly different from the work of any other artist working in the field of turned wood. Combining exotic woods or exceptional examples of domestic woods with gem stones and gold, he creates work which transcends utilitarian function and attempts a contribution to the spiritual and emotional well being of the human condition.
