#21 Enclosed Bowl with Aluminium & Acrylic Inlay
By: Andrew Whale
May 01, 2017 · 647 views

Hi This is my first attempt at making a bowl with an Aluminium & Acrylic inlay. Watching Jim Overton's YouTube channel inspired me to have a go. Check out Jim's channel (Jimson's Stuff) at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6h82LH3PtdiSHaj_7f09Fg The aluminium material was created by mixing epoxy resin with aluminium powder. I encountered numerous air holes in the aluminium when sanding, and it took ages to fill and re-sand. I will think twice before using this method again and any advice on alternative methods would be welcome. For the coloured pattern I used 3mm opaque acrylic. Next time I w

Notes from Tim Inman: The Point Tool. Bill Jones continues his turning demonstration at the Utah Woodturners Symposium 2001. Bill compares using 3-corner files to round bar stock of high speed steel for making the Point Tool. Sharpening techniques include hollow grinding versus flat honing. Bill explains bead cutting with the Point Tool and begins to prepare a landing for the male thread he will cut in the next segment.

Bill Jones continues in his 2001 Utah Woodturners Sypmosium demonstration. This time, Bill demonstrates hand thread chasing. Bill is at a disadvantage during this demonstration as he does not have his favorite 'variable speed foot pedal' to use with his lathe. A note from Tim Inman: I have made one of these infinitely variable speed foot pedals for one of my lathes per the instructions in Bill's first book, 'Notes from the Turning Shop.' From my own experience I can share that the foot pedal gives an incredible benefit to hand work such as fitting and thread chasing. Watch carefully as Bill moves fluidly and gracefully chasing threads. He makes something very skillful look like it must be easy enough for any beginner to do. His armrest is key. Hand threading is all about fluid skill and timing, with nothing to do with force.

Bill Jones, the last of 5 generations of British Ivory, Bone and Hardwood turners, continues his demonstration at the Utah Woodturning Symposium in 2001. 'Hardwood' to Bill Jones meant woods that were REALLY hard, like African Blackwood, Pink Ivory, English Box, Kingwood, Ebony, etc. In this segment, Bill demonstrates hand cutting rose segments in man-made ivory substitute and discusses the possible art worthiness of 'crumbling threads.' I can assure you, Bill Jones was not truly advocating for 'crumbling threads' as he spoke, but was expressing his disfavor with those making excuses for poor materials or workmanship by calling them 'art.' Bill Jones was the most highly skilled man I have ever known - in any trade - and he made no excuses for poor quality. Still he was one of the most humble and gentle people I have ever know as well.

'His overheads were negligible, His wants were few, and such a man who enjoys his work is wealthiest of all.' Bill Jones. He was the last of 5 generations of a family of 'Hardwood and Ivory' turners. This is the second in the Bill Jones demonstration videos from the Utah Turners Symposium 2001. Shot with a hand held camera from the audience. I apologize for the shaky movement. This is unedited video presented as it was taken. Although, Bill made his living as a 'bone grubber and ivory and hardwood turner' he adapted to modern times. He was very sensitive to the destruction of elephants and

Bill Jones was the last of 5 generations of 'bone grubbers.' Bone, Hardwood and Ivory turners - the very top of the turning professions. By 'hardwood' they didn't mean deciduous trees. They meant HARD woods like African Blackwood, Pink Ivory, Ebony, etc. This is the first clip from about one hour of video I taped at the Utah Woodturners Symposium in 2001. It was accomplished by simply hand holding a camera as I sat mesmerized in the audience. Bill did know I was taping, but we did not plan any presentation especially for the camera. This is live footage presented raw and unedited. It is the only video I have of Bill Jones working at the lathe. I will post the remainder of the tape in these small segments for your enjoyment and instruction. Bill was a special friend of mine. Many thanks to Bill's daughter Ginette for permission to upload these clips to Youtube. Tim Inman

Acrylic Drilling Test
By: RJBWoodTurner
August 22, 2014 · 1,460 views

Acrylic Drilling Test After my Acrylic videos the other day, I got an idea that I thought might work to reduce the blow out while drilling Acrylic Blanks. The way it works is, I sandwich a piece of wood below the blank in the vice and clamp the two tightly against each other. When the bit gets to the bottom of the blank there is still resistance so it drills through and into the wood reducing the blow out. I discuss how all 5 types of the blanks I used in the first videos performed. Shout Outs: Bob Rawson https://www.youtube.com/user/PlaustrumWoodworking/ Regards, Bob

Porous Antler In the last video I made, 'Preparing Antler to Make Pen Blanks' I received a question from a friend and colleague, Fredrik J. Fredrik has some Moose Antler he is considering making a pen from but it has a porous marrow center. He was wondering if there was anything he could do to fill the pores and make the antler usable. In this video, I show what I do to help correct the issue. I am sure there are many methods, this is just what I have figured out and it has worked for me. Regards, Bob
