In this video I rough turn a large piece of part seasoned Elm I acquired last year. I start by roughing out the blank so that i'm able to dry it in the oven to allow it to be finish turned sooner. The roughed out bowl is dried in the oven at 80 degrees C for 1.5hrs. It went from weighing 1,700g and 30% moisture to 1,400g and 12% moisture. The blank is the remounted on the lathe and finish turned. I sand it to 320 grit and then apply finishing oil. I hope you enjoyed this video. In this video I rough turn an 11' block of cherry crotch with the intention of leaving it to dry naturally. However, after waiting a week I decided to experiment with drying a bowl blank in my oven. I put the rough turned blank in the oven at 100 degrees C for an hour and it came out bone dry. There were a few cracks that had formed by the piece was still solid. I then finish turned the bowl finishing with Yorkshire grit and Hampshire sheen. The few cracks that remained after turning and sanding were filled by the process of wet sanding with oil and burnishing with shavings. The entire finis

Rough Turning an Elm Bowl With Burr Figuring
By: Nathan Cumming
October 10, 2017 · 1,038 views

In this video rough turn a piece of green Elm that I prepared from the haul of Elm i received a few months ago. When cutting the logs I noticed there were a few small burrs on the side of one so cut the log in such a way as to allow the burr figuring to show through on the base of the blank. The piece is part seasoned, some of the wood is quite dry but other parts very wet. I turn it down to an even wall thickness of 15mm and leave it to dry in the shavings. I shouldn't be long before it's dry enough to finish. I hope you liked this video. Thank you to my Subscribers, if you haven't Subscrib

Very Wet Rough Turn - Episode 70
By: Paul Lockwood
April 01, 2017 · 704 views

A trip down to the local mill where I picked up a good selection of wet wood, all for 3. Yes a good source of cheap but good wood which are all offcuts they could not use for fencing and sell off for firewood. The Oak especially is very wet, showing at around 27% on my cheap meter. So I decide to rough turn two Oak bowls and two Silver Birch smaller bowls. With the Oak being so wet and the grain running from top to bottom I decided to try and seal this with Shellac I mixed up from flakes before storing all the pieces away in a paper bag with the shavings. The workshop needed to be cleaned b

Woodturning - Rough Turning Pecan
By: Jason Lowrie
March 23, 2017 · 3,531 views

Most of the wood I turn is from downed trees I find in the free section of Craig's List. A few weeks back, I picked up a few logs from a pecan tree that had been felled about a year ago. The wood had been sitting out on the side of his house and developed some great spalting. In total I roughed out 10-12 bowls, a lidded box, and sealed a few spinal blanks. As these pieces dry, I'll have a few pieces to finish turn in 8-10 months once dry. Thank you for watching.

Rough Turning - Episode 62
By: Paul Lockwood
March 11, 2017 · 308 views

I've started going through some of my old wood that I bought from the local mill. It was wet when I bought it and never sealed so some have quite a few cracks where I'm now seeing what I can make out of them. A couple of pieces I've started with where they originally looked pretty dry, but when turning them found the moisture content was up to around 17%. As I wanted to make lidded boxes out of these I need to rough turn them so that they dry a little more as they will warp meaning that the lids will not fit properly if finished now. No sanding and no finish, just a quick video to show to rough turned items that have been put away in a bag with shavings for a few months to see what happens. This time I rough turned some more bowls out of green wood. I turned three out of walnut, two out of oak, and three out of maple. Once I had turned the bowls, I checked that the wall thickness was even, filled any small checks with thin CA glue, and sealed the end grain with end grain sealer. Some of the really green bowls I packed in a paper bag with shavings, but all the others I just set on the shelf. Rough Turning Walnut Bowl
By: Peter Matthew
December 27, 2014 · 594 views

I turned this bowl out of some walnut I had laying in the pile. The wood was still a little green so I left the walls a little thick to allow for warping. Once I had finished up turning I took the bowl out of my chuck and put it into a paper bag with shavings and taped it shut to slow the drying process. In a couple months or when the bowl has dried completely, I'll finish turning it.

By: Kim Gowney

This video is primarily for Debra who commissioned the bowl, it isn't intended as a tutorial. The first few still are of the half log the bowl eventually came from, the angle of the blank relative to the top was not favourable and so you see the huge offset in the initial mounting on the lathe, the end result though is the nicely balanced bowl at the end. The bowl will be coloured once the final turning is completed, I hope to video some of that too.

In this video I remount the now dry bowl to reform the tenon and the exterior. Then flip the bowl over into a chuck to turn the inside down to about 3/8' wall thickness. Finally, I flipped the bowl back around again into a set of home made cole jaws to turn the foot. After this experiment,

Rough Woodturning & Alcohol Soaking Wet Walnut Bowl

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com Now that I've return to my home shop and can again use my full sized lathe, I have an urge to turn something big -- something I've not been able to turn on a mini lathe. This rough turned bowl is walnut from a fellow member of the local woodturning club. The wood is wet but I had sealed it with wax emulsion to preserve it so there don't appear to be any bad cracks. I'll rough turn it, leaving it oversized, then soak it in alcohol to try to dry it faster without checking. Once I can dry it, I'll finish turn it to final size and finish. The bowl finished out at 11 inches diameter and 4 inches high. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next easy woodturning project video is ready. Just a quick hit testing out a new time-lapse phone app. I was rough-turning a 15' log blank from a recently felled 100-year-old Pecan tree. Took it to the workshop at NC State CraftCenter and used their lathe to get this natural-edge bowl to about 1' thickness for drying. Process took about an hour, mainly due to difficulties getting the 45-lb wet blank balanced enough to turn at a decent speed. App took a photo every 2 seconds, and I rendered it at 15 FPS so the whole thing runs in about 2 minutes of video. Sorry in advance for the poor lighting and image quality. It was an experiment. I wasn't expecting much but it actually came out better than I expected so I took liberty of posting here.

Woodturn and Microwave Dry Rough Bowl
By: As Wood Turns
March 19, 2012 · 10,556 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com For Woodturning this bowl, I'm starting with Apricot harvested recently. The wood blank is still very green or wet. I will microwave this bowl to see if the microwave will speed up the process and profit some 'instant gratification'. Alas, no luck with this wood turning project. Microwave drying even at 20% power produced disappointing checks and cracks in the bowl blank. To add insult to injury, the microwave only reduced moisture content by about 11%. There's too much moisture left to risk finish turning this bowl. So, I'll relegate it to the paper sack and let it season as I should have in the first place. I'll finish it in a couple of months and see what can be salvaged. Patience does have its place when working with green wood. Give me your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know with the next woodturning project video is ready. http://www.AsWoodTurns.com

Rapid roughing with my woodturning tool

In this video I quickly turn a rough piece of Black Locust to a bowl shape using my own design woodturning tool. I sell these on Etsy.com and on my web site at http://WWW.DWMontville.com. You can buy complete tools or just the hardware to make your own handle for. They come in two sizes, standard using a 1/4 inch square bit, or micro using a 1/8 inch square bit. I also sell a sharpening block to make it easy to sharpen or shape the bit end on a conventional grinder.

This piece is now gone to a new owner, but if you're interested in other pieces or would like to commission a piece from me, please visit my web site at http://www.DWMontville.com.

Grinding knots on the lathe

WEAR HAND AND EYE PROTECTION AND BE CAREFULL! Lots of turners use their chainsaws to trim large wood on the lathe. I'm not convinced that chainsaws and lathes are compatible I think this is a better way to trim logs on the lathe than using your chain saw. I had been looking at this chainsaw blade attachment for an angle grinder for some time. It is a bit expensive but worth it. More woodturning at www.turnedoutright.com The wood is wet Aspen.
