Starter projects for woodturners! When you’re getting started with woodturning, it’s natural to look for projects that are easy to complete while still teaching basic lathe skills. Workshop projects like chisel handles are a great place to start, but when you’re ready to make items suitable for use in your home, utensil handles are a great project for new woodturners. How to make handles for tools with and without a chuck ·
By: Wood Frontier
June 28, 2016 · 2,617 views

In this short video, I show you two different ways to make small tool handles on your wood lathe. In the first method, I show how I used a scroll chuck without smaller jaws. The second method shows how you can make a taper template jig that allows you to fit your turning piece directly into the headstock. I decided to make some better handles for these cheap files. I bought the set for around 7 and expected their lifespan to be limited to the immediate project. However they proved to be useful and stuck around. I wanted to keep my mind off of something so a simple project like this wa

I show how to turn your own woodturning tool handle. Why? There are some great values out there for tools that come unhandled or you make your own wood turning tools. Turning a tool handle is simple and you can customize the size and shape to perfectly fit your own needs. I explain about size considerations and show why bigger is not always better. Check out my blog http://mikepeacewoodturning.blogspot.com/ for demonstration handouts, downloadable copies of articles I have published, and links to some full length demonstrations I have done at Gwinnett Woodworkers channel.

Making an Oval wooden handle with Robert Sorby Stebcentres ·
By: Robert Sorby
February 29, 2008 · 75,572 views

Making an Oval wooden handle with Robert Sorby Stebcentres These revolutionary wood lathe drives are an essential addition to every turner's toolkit. Made under licence (Patent 2286138), their design incorporates not just a spring loaded point in stainless steel but also a set of razor sharp teeth which bite into the workpiece. For the novice turner this offers added security. By winding in the tail stock the degree of bite can be varied and the centre point firmly located. In the unfortunate case of a dig-in arising the workpiece simply stops revolving rather than kick back the turning chisel. This allows the beginner to use his skew chisel with a degree of confidence.
