By: RickTurns
July 05, 2018 · 8,396 views

Never one to take the simple route, I also added a negative-rake to the shear scraper. It only takes a bar of steel, an inexpensive HSS cutter, and a couple of inexpensive tools which you may already have. As a big bonus, it's easy to do and only takes an hour or two to make. Here are some links that might be useful if you want to make your own dedicated negative-rake shear scraper: HSS cutters: https://bit.ly/2zpEfVd (Woo

Turning a Chair Bodger's Beetle with Sam Angelo

A beetle is a large mallet used by a chair bodger. Along with a 'froe' it was used to split billets from green logs..... and to rough-out chair parts starting with a spring-pole lathe.. 'This video is my homage to the bodger of old and to those crafts-men and women around the world laboring without the aid of electricity or modern technology.' Jerry's Tenon Removal
By: Nubsnstubs
April 20, 2017 · 225 views

Visit my website at www.woodturnerstools.com for more information. This video is showing how I mount a form on a Jam Chuck using my Chuck Plate. From there it's on to removing unnecessary wood using a live center to keep the piece between centers. After the wood is removed, I need to set up my Tail Stock Steady to be able to work between centers to aid in reestablishing a dimple at center of the pedestal. When the dimple is made, it's back between centers using the live center to hollow out the pedestal. After the pedestal is hollowed with just a nub for support, the Tail Stock Steady is used again to remove the nub, and dress up the hollowed pedestal. For any questions you may have, please email Jerry at gmwoodworking78@msn.com or the phone number is 520-668-9900... .. Jerry

Tail Stock Steady by Jerry Marcantel
By: Nubsnstubs
February 24, 2017 · 359 views

This video is showing how I remove tenons from the bottoms of the forms I make. This particular piece has a pedestal foot. The tenon has already been reduced down to a nub 5/8' diameter. from that point on, I am using my Tail Stock Steady that I invented November, 2012. It does have a patent now, issued issued July, 19, 2016. The Tail Stock Steady is unique in use as the tenon and nub can be removed completely between centers. Sanding the bottom can also be done while the piece is still between centers. I've made over 500 pieces since the Tail Stock Steady conception, and only lost 3 pieces testing the first prototype. After those losses, it's been complete success on all pieces I've started. For more information, contact me at gmwoodworking78@msn.com for answers to any questions or comments you might have. Better quality videos will be posted in the near future. .. Jerry (in Tucson)

Each adjustment moved the axis between 90 and 120 degrees and increased offset from the original axis. The finish is friction polish buffed. This turning has no resemblance and no useful purpose. June 15, 2016 · 10,233 views

This is a review of my dust extractor that I built a year ago. It is powered by a twin motor Camvac dust extractor and incorporates a cyclone prefilter with 3 inch inlet and outlet. I have also incorporated a shop built pressure release valve to stock the drum imploding if there is a blockage. No matter how good your dust extractor is it is important to remember to wear a good quality respirator mask. Thanks for watching Jim Overton Disclaimer Woodturning is potentially dangerous! My videos are designed to give viewers creative ideas. The way I work is not necessarily the best or safest way to work! Your safety is your own responsibility not mine. Please follow all safety procedures and wear personal protective equipment. Wear a visor and a respirator dust mask at all times. Be safe, be creative and enjoy your turning.

Welcome to my channel. I have been turning all my life and want to share the techniques I discovered over the years. The first 40 videos on my channel were technique oriented showing different parts of the process. Lately, I have been doing project oriented videos. I still hope over the long haul to cover all the techniques over multiple videos. This project format is much better at showing the entire turning sequence start to finish. My focus is on teaching methods of turning that are easy and safe and that are versatile for any kind of turning you wish to pursue. I hope you enjoy my videos,

my little tool rest for my homemade 'free lathe'. the tool rest for this lathe is clearly a simple solution but it does work. it is missing the customary vertical adjustment but at the scale of the work planned for this lathe i dont think it will be that critical an issue...if it is ill have to redesign the tool rest accordingly. this little lathe has been a joy to put together and considering it was built from only the parts i had sitting around, it has performed flawlessly. t planning on building a lathe? Make a Lathe Chip Deflector for Easy Wood Tool - Re-edit
By: Rick McQuay
March 28, 2016 · 608 views

This chip deflector is a finger saver. When using carbide tools the wood streams directly back toward your hand and, especially dry wood, can inflict thousands of tiny nicks that you won't notice until later when your hand feels like it's on fire. My shields work terrifically, are easy to make, and I highly recommend them. I am still using the same two shields made in this video. This video from 2013 has been re-edited because the first version was poorly done and watching it made me nauseous. The video quality is still 480p and rather poor in spots because it was shot was using an old Canon point and shoot. The build part is slightly abbreviated however I added a video of the deflector in use.

THE BIG UGLY TOOL by Reed Gray aka Robo Hippy with Randal Dale
By: robohippy

Two notes here. The cold rolled bar stock is a softer metal, which means you don’t want to sharpen it on CBN wheels. I do relieve the heel, just like on bowl gouges on an old standard grinding wheel, or on a belt sander, then sharpen on my CBN wheels. There is minimal loading of the soft metal on the CBN wheels, but thus far, I have never had any problem getting it off by sharpening a regular M2HSS scraper or a V10 scraper. The one that I made where I attached it to the bar stock with JB weld seems to hold up, but the JB Weld left a streak on my CBN wheel. It still seems to cut just fine whe

DIY Welded Toolrest for Wood Mini-Lathe
By: Barry's Workshop
December 13, 2015 · 2,572 views

I got tired of the limits of the toolrest that came with my mini lathe so I welded a larger one using some scrap hot rolled angle and steel rod that I had left over from other projects. It's only a few inches wider (8.5' [22cm] vs. 6' [15cm]), but it makes a big difference in being able to turn larger work. I also didn't want to make it too big because my lathe's banjo only has 5/8' [16mm] shaft. Music by audionautix.com. Released under Creative Commons License 3.0.

As I went into making bracelets with my miter box, I thought about some chucks. As decent chuck start selling at about 250 EURO over here in Germany I thought about making my own. I chose spruce, as this is flexible enough to expand with the cone shaped screw without breaking. To qualify as an entry for Summers Woodworking's third annual creative 2x4 Competition Contest the video has to be less than 10 minutes, so I had to edit some parts out of it. I hope you get inspired to make some tools on your own, they might be not that versatile, but do exact what you want from them. For the ones inter

Make a tool rest - part 6 - Brazing
By: RickTurns
March 19, 2015 · 7,318 views

In this sixth and final video in my series of videos about making a tool rest (without welding!), I braze the arm to the post, and then the wear strip to the arm. After cleaning up the new tool rest, I cut and adjust the height on the lathe. The manufacturer's video on using the oxy-mapp torch is here: https://youtu.be/a38PdQkcInA Jan 23 2016 - this just in! Lyle Jamieson passed on a suggestion to put a wedge of wood in the right angle of the angle iron, so that if the tool slips off the end (or even the lip) of the rest, you'll be less likely of catching a finger or two. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Depth Gouge For Depth Stop On A Drillbit
By: PeteTGIF
March 19, 2015 · 1,013 views

After a couple of mishaps I came up with the idea of this jig. With it I'm able to set up the metall depth stop on a drill bit. I usually use the depth stop drilling free hand holes for dowells or a center hole on a bowl blank to mark the depth of the inside before hollowing out the inside. As I made this, I remembered Chris Fischer who recently turned a bowl. Incredible Job, but he had some problems finding the right depth for the inside. I'll send him this jig and a set of the three depth stops, so he'll be able to drill a precise hole and I hop he'll be able to improve on making his bowls.

Homemade Lathe Disc Sander with Changable Grits
By: Kevin Hou
December 14, 2014 · 3,981 views

This is a disc sander that I made out of very limited supplies and tools. It utilizes the lathe's functionality to make a completely working disc sander. I also thought up a way of easily switching grits/discs. This way the sandpaper can easily be replaced when it wears out. Features: Completely functioning disc sander Efficient, quick-change design Supports multiple grits and discs (double sided discs as well) Easy to make and easy to use Very cheap and affordable If I were to do this project again, I would probably try and make the disc a little bit bigger. Also, I might go out and buy materials so that all my screws are uniform, etc. (I used scraps and screws I found here and there) Enjoy! My project portfolio is: http://kevinhou.wix.com/projects Here is the link to my blog, Flickr, Github, etc. http://khou22.github.io/ I have galleries and blog posts that highlight my wood, electronics, programming, and metal projects.

This is merely a description using my Chuck Plate to remount this form to remake the tenon to fit my chuck. While resizing the tenon, I decided to refine the shape. Update To My DIY Lathe Steady Rest
By: As Wood Turns
September 04, 2014 · 7,071 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I've been using my home made steady rest for over a year. During this time, I've thought of a couple of improvements: 1) Use locknuts in place of the nuts. Vibration in use caused nuts to come loose and fall off. 2) Replace the base that mounts it to the lathe so that I can place the tool rest closer to the project and the steady rest. Other than the nuts, replacing the base was the easy part. I still needed the steady to be adjustable so the key upgrade was a coupling assembly. This assembly enables the steady upright to be attached to the base but enables adjustmen

Low carbon steel, high carbon steel, high speed steel -- UGH!! Which one do I use to make wood turning tools? Do I need to heat treat the tools? Phil Joines helps us understand the properties and use of each of these types of steel. He also talks about when and how to heat treat the steel as we are making tools. This presentation was recorded November 2013 at the monthly meeting of the Golden Triangle Woodturners in Denton, Texas. Find out more about our club at www.goldentrianglewoodturners.org

HOMEMADE WOODTURNING TOOLS PART:4 SHAPING EXTENDED DRILL SHANK DETAIL CUTTERS
By: sjm2inok
August 28, 2013 · 18,891 views

In this video I show how I shape the drill shank into detail cutter bits that go into the aluminum and PVC handles. With the long drill shanks I shape one end with a 'fingernail' style grind and the other end I shape a 'spindle' style grind. I don't show the final sharpening on the Jet slow-speed wet grinder using the Tormek jig. If anyone wants to see that process send me a message and I'll do a video on that process. These drill shank cutters are excellent for small detail cutting and deep sharp grooves, I also a short demo on how they cu in a piece of hard wood. These cutters are very sharp and keep a good cutting edge. As with any cutting tool, wear safety glasses and USE CAUTION.

My DIY Lathe Steady Rest
By: As Wood Turns
August 27, 2013 · 22,468 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com After using my new steady rest turning the travel mug, many viewer requested more information about the steady rest. So here we go. It's make from Baltic birch plywood with layers glued together as necessary for thickness. The wheels came from a pair of roller blades I purchased at a local thrift store. It works fine except I'd like to be able to more my tool rest closer when the steady is near the end of the workpiece. I think it can be much closer. But before I modify the base, I'd like your ideas. I used 1/4 inch hardware. I will be doubling the nuts to prevent them from loosening. I will appreciate all comments and suggestions for improvements. Thank you in advance. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next woodturning project video is ready.

HOMEMADE WOODTURNING TOOLS:PART3, SHARPENING CARBIDE SCRAPERS, DRILL SHANK DETAIL TOOLS
By: sjm2inok
August 21, 2013 · 18,405 views

In this video I'll show you how you CAN resharpen carbide shear scrapers...you can resharpen carbide shear cutters as well by using the diamond disk on the bevel only. I will also show how you can make two-in-one detail scrapers/cutters using 1/8', 3/16' and 1/4' extended drill bit shanks and these tools will fit in the homemade tool handle adapters and handles shown previously. In the next video, uploaded soon, I'll show how I grind the drill shank bits to use as scrapers and I will demo them on a piece of hardwood. I hope my ideas will inspire others to stop spending a fortune on commercial tools and enjoy the benefits of making tools tailored to your specific needs.

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com In this video, I'm going into greater detail on the faceplates and system used in making the doubly eccentric magic wand. The system consists of 2 faceplates, 4 brass pins, and some plastic countertop laminate. With the system, I can exactly index most eccentric spindle turnings that use a tail stock. Although I made these faceplates for magic wands, now I can many, many other uses to make repeatable successful eccentric turnings. Easy DIY Tenon Cutters for Woodturning
By: As Wood Turns
June 07, 2013 · 22,356 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I cut tenons regularly to join different pieces of a project together. They're a common element but I really hate it when I cut one too small. The flip side is stopping the lathe so often to creap up on the perfect size. Many times I've used a open end wrench to help size. But a viewer suggested I grind an edge on one side of the wrench. Then I'd have a tenon cutter and a tenon sizer in one tool. So here we have a set from 1/4 inch up to 3/4 inch made from a cheap set of end wrenches. Grinding was not as simple as I had thought but not so complex in the end. All it took was a little time at the grinder. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next woodturning project video is ready.
