Woodturning - Freeze Drying Rough Turned Projects
By: William Hunt
August 01, 2018 · 2,124 views

As a self-confessed impatient woodturner, I’m always seeking shortcuts that will help in the rapid conclusion of projects. Turning green wood has never really appealed to me for that reason, i.e. the wait between rough turning and finishing. Previously I've tried employing a microwave oven to speed up the drying process and had some success with this. This week Im trying something new - freeze drying rough-turned projects. Freeze drying (sublimation) is the process of turning from water directly into water-vapour bypassing the traditional liquid phase. This is achieved by thawing the proje

Turning Green Wood 2 - Two Holly Hollows
By: William Hunt
May 11, 2018 · 1,034 views

In this video I successfully manage to turn two pieces from green-ish Holly, dry and finish them them is one day. The Holly was cut down in December 2017, sealed and stored in my garage since then with a recorded moisture content of 30%. However, the moisture content showed 20% when tested again just six months later, I don’t understand why the significant drop insuch a short period. I had planned to rough turn the boil the two pieces in water prior to drying in the microwave. However, I considered that a 20% moisture content could be reduced to 10% in the microwave without too much risk of splitting. I got away with it!

Turning Green Wood 1 - Laburnum Whole Log Bowl
By: William Hunt
May 05, 2018 · 1,107 views

This week I have struck another project off my woodturning bucket list and have attempted to turn a whole-log Laburnum bowl from wet to finish in a day. The microwave drying process worked out very well, but not a methodology I would adopt as a default. I believe natural air-dried wood are the best. The project did not turn out as I had expected, and looks like it should be on Fred Flintstone’s desk. Carl Jacobson has uploaded two videos relevant to this project, see how its done properly here: https://youtu.be/mTYX5j9g4Vg and here…. https://youtu.be/DcPYt0YiLLM

Green Woodturning - Two Halves Turn To More Than A Whole
By: As Wood Turns
April 27, 2018 · 5,194 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com This bowl has been in process for seven months - more if you count time from harvest to when I started roughing the wood. When I started turning, my plan was to experiment with a project cut in half and reassembled. My wood was still very green or wet and needed to dry before final turning. As I coated it with sealer, I did not think the profile looked very good and thought it might be better just to turn it into a typical bowl. However, as it dried, it also cracked in some end grain. Then the choice became firewood or go back to plan A and cut through the crack. I

Very Wet Rough Turn - Episode 70
By: Paul Lockwood
April 01, 2017 · 712 views

A trip down to the local mill where I picked up a good selection of wet wood, all for 3. Yes a good source of cheap but good wood which are all offcuts they could not use for fencing and sell off for firewood. The Oak especially is very wet, showing at around 27% on my cheap meter. So I decide to rough turn two Oak bowls and two Silver Birch smaller bowls. With the Oak being so wet and the grain running from top to bottom I decided to try and seal this with Shellac I mixed up from flakes before storing all the pieces away in a paper bag with the shavings. The workshop needed to be cleaned b

Lessons Learned In Turning Knotty Green Cherry Bowl
By: As Wood Turns
December 31, 2016 · 4,460 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I have a bunch of fresh green cherry. All of it has been ripped in half and the ends sealed with end grain sealer. But before it dries too much, I want to turn a bowl. However, my selected piece of wood has some issues. The biggest issue is a broken limb coming out from one side. The limb is a combination of old dry shattered wood, green wood, end grain. I don't know how deep this mess goes. Maybe I should have cut it away before turning or trashed the block of wood to begin with. That is certainly an option. However, I'll work the issues as they come to bear. In

Preparing Green Cherry - Not Solely For Bowls
By: As Wood Turns
December 16, 2016 · 3,670 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com Not every project results in a beautiful object. Some I do well in advance with a beautiful object in mind. This is the case in this video. I was given some fresh cut or green cherry logs. I promptly ripped each in half through the pith. Some I cut into bowl blanks. However, some I left long and turned into long cylinders for later projects. Each was waxed. I'll leave them to dry until needed. When I want to use one, I'll weigh it on about a 2 week interval. When it stops losing weight, it will be dry. Future spindle projects in the making. Good turning. Avoiding Stepping On Cracks In Semi Dry Elm Bowl
By: As Wood Turns
August 26, 2016 · 7,713 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I picked up this chunk of wood at a local woodturning club meeting. It was supposed to be green elm. This made sense because the demonstration topic was green wood turning. However, upon closer inspections and some turning, it quickly became obvious that it had been cut for some time. There were large end checks. Once into the interior of the wood, it did not feel wet enough for fresh green wood. It is elm - just not fresh green Those drying checks forced me to turn it smaller than originally expected. Yes, maybe I could have filled them but filling cracks in wet

Re-edited... Initial upload was very unstable, not my best video, apologies to my subscribers and others (the first 100) that may have watched the bad edit!!! The first couple shots are still a bit shaky... Woodturning a green log. I'm not sure of the type of wood but it is nice and clear. I thought that using a heat gun on the bowl after I had turned it thin might be a good idea. It seemed to work, but time will tell. It soaked up Danish oil like a sponge, which seems to be a good indication it worked. Thanks for watching!

It was my way of making a few shillings in the wet and bad weather days of our winter months. I had a small workshop, plenty of timber, so I could go in there on those bad days and make bowls and plates to sell, First at craft fa

January 30, 2015 · 4,263 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I started this project in July 2013 when I helped a friend cut down a large cherry tree in his back yard. I turned some of the wood into cylinders starting to make small boxes. But the difference is that the wood was very fresh and wet. Knowing that it would shrink and distort as it dried, I left the walls thick but did bore out the inside. Then I wrapped them up with the bored out ends exposed and left them to dry--hopefully from the inside out. Now with the wood dry, I remounted the pieces to re-trim the tenons, and finish turn the box. I used gouges, a skew, and a

Green Woodturning Techniques - Alcohol Soak & Walnut Oil Finish
By: As Wood Turns
January 15, 2015 · 10,517 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I'm experimenting with two techniques for my woodturning: one for drying wet or green wood; one for finishishing. For drying a bowl after rough turning the bowl blank, I'm using denatured alcohol (DNA) for an overnight soak, then drying the bowl in a controlled environment such as a brown paper bag. For finishing, I'm following a practice I saw at Mike Mahoney's shop -- soaking the finished project in walnut oil expecting deeper penetration of the oil into the wood. As these are experimental techniques, I welcome comments and suggestions. For both processes, I'm using large plastic bowls with lids to hold and store the alcohol or oil. Remount & Finish Woodturning Alcohol Soaked Green Bowl

January 09, 2015 · 5,041 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I rough turned this birch bowl about six months ago from a fresh green trunk a friend found for me. At that time, I did not expect much from this bowl thinking that birch is a fairly blond wood without a lot of character. To expedite the drying process, I soaked this bowl overnight in denatured alcohol then left it to dry in a brown paper bag. Originally, the rough bowl weighed 3,760 grams. In ten days, it lost 952 grams or 25% of its original weight. Then I was distracted by life and did not weigh it again for four months at which time it then weighed 2320 grams h

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com I rough turned this apricot bowl a little over two years ago. I recorded its weight while it was drying. It lost about 40% of its original weight. In this video, I remounted the bowl to trim the base and tenon before turning the bowl to its final shape and wall thickness. I used my home made Cole jaws to turn the base. Reverse Chuck And Finish A Green Turned Bowl

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com While waiting for my recent wet walnut bowl to dry, I decided to actually finish another one I rough turned several years ago. (It did not really need that long to dry). This bowl I held between a closed chuck and the tailstock to refine the mounting tenon and then to re-turn the exterior. While I was at it, I sanded and finished the exterior with walnut oil. After reversing in again into the tenon, I turned, sanded and finished the interior. Then reversing it yet one more time to complete the foot. I think it's beautiful. I hope my sister can enjoy it. Woodturning Green Wood - A Natural Edge Bowl

January 09, 2014 · 8,190 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com After a storm broke a large limb from a gum tree in my yard, I decided to get some benefit from my misfortune. A friend had helped clean up the mess so I decided to turn a natural edge bowl to give him in recognition for his help. This green wood bowl is turned from gum. The bark edge is toward the upper side of the bowl for a natural edge. This bowl is about 8' across and 4' tall. It is finished with beeswax and mineral oil. I'm leaving a small spigot on the bottom until it has had a chance to dry and warp. After that I'll remount it and re-flatten the bottom to make it sit flat. I'm always fortunate with all the bark stays on my natural edge bowl. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next easy woodturning project video is ready.

Hello: Back in episode #7 I turned a green Arbutus bowl... I was pleased with the look of the bowl when I was done... but the next day it started to crack... and then it cracked some more.. and finally it was two pieces (with a little help from me!!)! Well I still liked the look of the bowl so I thought that by filling the cracks with Ebony sawdust and CA glue... I should be able to make this work again! This was my adventure and I hope that there is something in it which sparks an idea in somebodies head!! Thanks for watching Larry

This has been a disappointing turn, In the short run... but it will still make an interesting project after it has finished drying and checking and all the stuff it is going to do... and then I will make another video of the repair job!! http://www.AsWoodTurns.com The wood for this bowl came from a friend who lives nearby. When someone gives me a bunch of wood, I like to make them something from it. In this case, I gave her a choice of a bowl soon but that may warp a little and a bowl that would not warp but that would take much longer to make. She chose a bowl now. This bowl is from green or wet cherry from her back yard. It is over six inches tall and about 5 inches in diameter. It is finished with walnut oil. Since it is still very wet, I told here to keep it in a grocery store paper bag for several weeks. She's happy with the bowl. I just hope it does not crack. Turning A Green Wood Dish By Accident

April 19, 2013 · 3,184 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com For bowl turning, I'm always on the search for wood. And, when someone gives me some, I like to give them a bowl from their wood in return. Here, I want to turn a bowl from elm for a son's friend who gave me the wood. However, it turned out that the wood had a lot of cracks - not from drying - the wood had been sawn in half thru the pith, waxed, and sealed in plastic bags. Initially, my plan was to rough turn the bowl then let it dry before finishing. As I cut into the wood, the cracks appeared more and bigger. First, I wasted off the top 1.5 inches to get rid of som

I promptly waxed the rough bowl, plut it in a paper bag, and placed it on a shelf to dry. I intended to leave it for about a year. More than the allotted time has passed. You could say that life interfered. In the meantime the bowl cracked severely while drying. What a disappointment! I don't want to burn it now that it is dry. I decided to fill the cracked with a series of plugs from different hardwoods: Apricot, Walnut, and Maple. After re-truing the tenon and smoothin

Green Woodturning A Wood Bowl in Apricot

August 10, 2012 · 2,568 views

http://www.aswoodturns.com This woodturning project, a small bowl turned from apricot, was a nice short fun project. The wood came from urban forestry, meaning, I helped a neighbor cut down the apricot tree he didn't want in his yard anymore. I was glad to help in return for the wood. At the beginning of the bowl turning, I had not decided whether to turn in completely in one session or to turn it in two sessions - months apart. The difference is when the bowl has time to dry. If turned in one session, I turn it to final size, then let it try. As it dries, it shrinks and warps into its own un

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com This woodturning project was a large green or wet turned ash wood bowl. Turning green wood is a pleasure. Shavings fly off in wonderful cascades. But, this wood bowl was a challenge because of its size and a large crack that developed while it was drying. In the first video of this block, I described the problem. A large branch broke off in a storm and fell on his house. He cut it off and let me have the largest limbs. I rough turned it but did not want to sand it then because the wet wood tends to load up sandpaper. I left it in a brown paper sack for 19 days. During the drying it lost 30% of its original weight. I felt it would be dry enough to finish turn and sand. Any additional shrinkage from the green wood drying should then be minimal. On

Finish Woodturning Plum Wood Bowl From Green Wood
By: As Wood Turns
April 13, 2012 · 5,196 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com For this woodturning project, I finish turn a piece of plum originally from a tree in my back yard. This bowl was rough turned, painted with a wax emulsion, placed in a brown paper bag and left on my shelf for several years. During the drying process, it shrunk radically in several dimensions. It also opened a crack clear through the bottom and widened a rot area. It and the mounting tenon were definitely oblong. The difference in length versus width in the tenon was a full 1/2 inch. The average of the difference falls into a no man's zone in the capacity of my chuck. Too small for one set of jaws; too large for another set of jaws. Although the intended lip on the bowl did not survive, I am pleased with the result. More at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com
