Turn an End Grain Bowl Without a Chuck
By: Mike Peace Woodturning
May 17, 2019 · 10,591 views

I demonstrate how to turn a small end grain bowl using a faceplate. Most bowls are turned cross grain (face grain grain orientation) where the grain runs 90 degrees to the lathe bed. End Grain bowls are turned with the grain running parallel to the lathe bed. I explain the difference between a cross grain and end grain bowls and why woodturners turn mostly cross grain bowls. How I remove the recess from the bottom of my bowls
By: J.B Wood Turning
March 10, 2018 · 277 views

When I start my bowl on a screw chuck I will cut a recess in the bottom so I can reverse the bowl position on to an expandable chuck. I find the recess somewhat annoying and ugly. This video shows how I remove the recess from the bottom of my bowls. Some bowls I finish all but the bottom on the lathe, some I finish completely off the lathe. This bowl has a finish on all but the bottom.

Finishing Bottom of Burl Bowls
By: Nick Rosato
December 09, 2016 · 171 views

This is my jam chuck approach to removing or reshaping the tenon on the bottom of bowls. I use a 1/2' bowl gouge and spindle gouge. I leave a small nub and then remove it with a flat chisel. I use this approach when the vacuum chuck will not work. In this case, the burl wood had small voids and bark inclusions that didn't allow full vacuum so I had to use jam chuck.

In this video I show some of the tricks and techniques I use when turning, hollowing and remounting a bowl on my wood lathe. This is part of my collection of wood turning videos. It shows some more advanced aspects of wood turning. The bowl blank was roughed out when it was wet, sealed with a waxy coating, and placed is a temperature controlled storage for a couple of years. This slow drying process warped the wood and let it dry without cracking. Now it is ready for the final steps, returning it to round and finishing it.

This is our club's first in a series demonstration during which we go back to basics focusing on fundamental cuts and techniques of woodturning. In this demonstration, we have selected basic bowl turning. During these Back to Basics club demonstrations, we will describe the basic cuts, demonstrate them, then let the club members that wish take a shot at making the cuts under the supervision of an experienced turner. Our goal is to promote the arts and hobby of wood turning and to encourage people to try a facet of turning they may not have yet tried. The club members really enjoyed this session. We intend to do a few others as this year progresses. Find out more bout our group in Denton Texas by going to www.goldentrianglewoodturners.org
