Making My Own Negative Rake Scraper - Iroko Handle
By: Nathan Cumming
March 31, 2018 · 9,501 views

In this video I make my own negative rake scraper using a piece of High Speed Steel that is 6x25x200. I grind a tang onto one end using a 6' wheel grinder before turning a handle from Iroko. Once the steel is glued into the handle I grind a curve onto the end of the blade using the wheel grinder. I then use the Robert Sorby Pro Edge to grind a 25 degree bevel on both sides and sharpen a keen edge starting with 60 grit and moving up to 120. I hope you enjoy this video and find it instructive. Shear Scraping? What is that?
By: Mike Peace Woodturning

Shear scraping is a less aggressive way of scraping and can provide a better surface than using a scraper flat on the tool rest. Every wood turner should have this technique in his arsenal. What happens when you rush in work - woodturning
By: Jake Gevorgian
February 02, 2017 · 5,075 views

The video shows how can a tool catch destroy the piece due to the wrong working phase. Conclusion The wood was a spalted beechwood that has hard and soft fibers due to spalting. The catch presented a very strong blow to the soft aspect of the wood and broke it. The correct way of shaping the opening of this lid would have been progressive light cuts with the use of smaller chisels. The thickness of the mortise walls are also a big factor—if the mortise walls were thicker, then it would withstand the blow shown in this catch. Dangers are unforeseeable, therefore wearing face and headtop shields are necessary while operating lathe machine.

Negative Rake Scraping
By: Brian Havens
November 13, 2015 · 45,403 views

Negative Rake Scrapers are low risk tools that are great for refining the final shape of your work. And although the finish they leave on the work is not quite as clean as shear scraping, it is often clean enough to start sanding with 150 or 180 grit. They are low risk because, unlike when conventional scraping, they are 'neutral' in the sense that very little energy transfers from the work to the tool, so little that they can even be used safely directly into end grain on face work! There is a downside, however, which is that the burr on a negative rake scraper is fragile and does not last long. No need to fret, though, because there are several things that we can do to mitigate this downside. Cover tool: Negative Rake Bowl Scraper (reground from an Ashley Iles scraper.) Woods: - Black Walnut - Ash (The green bowl from the Sep. President's Challenge) - Hard Maple (spindle) - Soft Maple (end-grain hollowing)

(Conventional) Scraping
By: Brian Havens
August 28, 2015 · 27,025 views

At one end of the spectrum, scrapers can take feather—even powder-like—shavings, making them excellent tools for refining the shape and surface of our work. On the other end of the spectrum, they can be used for heavy hollowing, especially in situations where we have reached the limit of our cutting tools. Like a relief pitcher, scrapers can pick up and finish a job where the cutting tools left off. Being able to be effective with scrapers, however, requires a clear understanding of the difference between cutting and scraping. After explaining the difference between cutting and scraping, we take a look at how to use and setup a scraper. Then we'll see how scrapers interact with the various grain orientations. A bowl scraper can create a lot of torque on your hands and body. If your feet are not in the correct position you can wind up with a nasty catch or even a nasty bruise. This clip shows the correct stance for using a bowl scraper with a negative rake. The stance is the same for a standard ground bowl scraper, but remember to raise the tool handle above center to minimize getting a catch.

Minimal Scraping Cuts - Woodturning

Proposed! ----- The filming took place in St. John. We had taken a very long footage where I was demonstrating the use of this scraper. We were on our way home and right there, one of our filming crew members saw Michele Bachmann and, perhaps out of excitement or Passion, he dropped the film casing down. The casing poped open and, unfortunately, the film got exposed to the light and we were unable to save it.
