This video is a second attempt to show how to use SketchUp to design, in virtual 3D, a multi axis piece. This particular virtual 3D piece was inspired by a multi axis piece done by Peter Rand. One of the pieces in Peter's 6 piece set titled 'Gathering', in one view, reminded me of The Maltese Falcon ( from the old black and white film of the same name.). The objective of the piece is to evoke in a viewer a connection to an iconic object - and then take the viewer from there into the abstract - where there's much more room for interpretation. Virtually DESIGNING a multi axis piece in SketchUp Multi axis turning can be quite confusing and seem chaotic. Barbara Dill's articles and demonstrations of her Structured Approach to Multi Axis Turning has gone a long ways towards bringing order out of the apparent chaos of multi axis pieces. This video shows HOW I used SketchUp to design, in virtual 3D, a multi axis piece, inspired by a multi axis piece done by Peter Rand, that, in one view, reminded me of The Maltese Falcon, from the old black and white film of the same name.

For woodturners, multi-axis turning offers a means to go beyond just ROUND.
