woodturning a spurtle
By: Geiserwoodturner
June 09, 2018 · 224 views

This project video is a tutorial on how to make a spurtle to stir oatmeal or porridge. I show how I make this traditional Scottish kitchen utensil. I start out with a blank of cherry that is 1' x 1' x 14' long. I mount the blank between centers by feel and turn on the wood lathe. I use a skew chisel instead of a spindle roughing gouge to rough down this blank. A spurtle has a traditional thistle on top that's made to represent the thistle flower. Using just a skew I finish up making this stir stick that is good for eliminating lumps in your oatmeal. The finish is mineral oil and beeswa

Woodturning a Wool Caddy from Sydney Blue Gum
By: Fatso's Workshop
May 17, 2018 · 240 views

I've turned up a few wool or yarn caddies for the upcoming Soul Craft Festival that I'm going to. These are an alternative to a yarn bowl, with a bearing underneath so that they can spin. These are made from some Sydney Blue Gum (E. saligna) which is a lovely red timber (very much unlike the blond colour of the Southern Blue Gum E.globulus) \\Music:- Mystery Club by Waylon Thornton is licensed under a Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License.

More Natural Edge From Spring Pruning - Rustic Napkin Rings
By: As Wood Turns
March 31, 2017 · 3,321 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com In this video I am again using a sucker I had pruned from a hazelnut tree. This time, I'm turning a set of natural edge rustic napkin rings with a stand for their display and storage. This is a set of eight rings about 1 1/2 inch diamter and about 1 inch long finished with walnut oil. The challenge in this project is cleaning up the centers. Since the entire outside is bark, only the inside had to be sanded. Still, it is a simple but repetive project. One for a woodturner or looking for the totally unique dining accessory. Good turning. Enter your email at http://www.AsWoodTurns.com & I'll let you know when the next easy woodturning project video is ready. This video is all about making a Celtic Knot, it just happened to get made into a bottle opener handle. This is a much more simple project than I thought it would be, once I got the walnut cut into 1/8' thick boards. This process would be easy to use for many other projects, and I'll be applying what I learned from this project to future videos! I hope you enjoy!

Celtic Knot Dresses Up Pizza Cutter Handle
By: As Wood Turns
September 23, 2016 · 3,632 views

http://www.AsWoodTurns.com My wife asked me to turn a new handle for her pizza cutter. The original handle had almost disintegrated. A handle is a fairly simple spindle project. But I decided to dress it up a little bit. After all, according to my children, pizza is the foundation of all food groups. One can live and thrive on pizza. This handle is maple with walnut accents. it is about 6 inches long and about 1 inch in diameter. The maple is an example of urban forestry - it came from a tree downed in a storm three years earlier. At that time, it was rough turned and set aside. The Celtic

wood Turning #124 Getting to the Bottom of Things

So this was another attempt to bring the wood pile into the kitchen! To be realistic about this it is also good for Cheese Whiz or Jam or anything else that resides deep inside a container! I’m sure it will get put to good use around here! I didn’t go into the grinding of the knife to get it to a point where I could get it to fit... that was a long and arduous task ... made all the harder by my lack of metal working skills! So I figured that it would be better explained by someone that knows how to do it properly! The main thing with was to make it so you could get those last few morsels easil

Well what more is there to say, eh? My Dad is of the ilk that if it needs doing... you just do it! Do you know that somewhere around 1956 he converted his car into a camper? Well that is what I remember anyway! It might even have been a ’38 Dodge... I don’t have any pictures of it and only the foggiest memories of it! This was a guy who took a sheet of plywood and made a suitcase out of it. Then he carried four 3’ long dowels that were 1 1/2”thick in it. When you got to where you were going... you opened it up and put the dowels into the holes he had put in the bottom side and you had a 5’x3’

Wood Turning #115 A Pallet Spurtle in Walnut

Spurtles are a fun turn and a very useful one too! In addition to stirring porridge I have found that they work exceptionally well for stirring natural peanut butter. The brand that comes to mind here is Adams... but I would imagine it is probably a North American variety! I am sure that it would work with any of them! I have decided that seeing as this is fairly short... and has a lot of text in it anyway.. I am only putting out the one video this time. For the viewers who like the uncluttered look of the non texted version... this video is an exception... and not the way things will remain!

Charlie's Drumming Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TacoGamingification/videos *** Join me, Chris Fisher, the Blind Wood Turner, in my workshop. I started out in life as a regular guy, working in auto body repair at BMW, until one day, completely out of the blue, a rare virus (Toxoplasmosis) reared its ugly head and caused me to lose my sight in a matter of weeks. Despite the challenges of coming to terms with losing my sight, I refused to give up and, after four years I decided to take u

I am thankful that the Arbutus behaved itself! It is one of those woods that you will find cracks deep inside the wood. There may not be any sign of it on the surface... It just waits there to surprise you! These Muddlers... in addition to having its way with the limes and lemons... are also used on mint and sage... and I would imagine there are a bunch more as well! Sterling strikes me as an All American Boy, and I hope he w

I was pretty sure that this had been a Cherry branch until I remembered that I hadn't pruned any large branches off the Cherry! I suppose I could have edited that part out... but that isn't the way I work! Same as when I filmed the green screen part... the audio really sucked!! So i rerecorded the audio... and then had to try and make it look like that was what I was saying at that time! The Chemo bottle holder that I did in my last video worked very well... with a couple of small defects that had to be worked around! The cap broke! That kind of sucked! It had gotten too thin and the notch that I cut in to accommodate the hose.... well ... the notch ran the same direction as the grain...well it dropped on the floor once and that was the end of it! I have tried curving the lines in that cut so that it may deflect any temptation for that piece to split. Having that knot go through just on the other side of that was pretty handy too! While this belt arrangement worked... and work

I am sure that using a table saw set at an angle would have created a much more accurate set of teeth... But they kind of fit my style of cooking... just a little bit off! Wood Turnng # 60 The Masher
By: The Tiny Trailer Workshop
March 29, 2014 · 8,320 views

A plunger for mashing berries! I don't know it just doesn't sound as good! This is Arbutus which elsewhere is called Medrona and as cool as it looks I will be turning another one as this one has cracks happening on the lower section. It probably won't go anywhere but it would allow for juice to get in and cause health issues... It'll be a piece of cake now that I have done one! Because Arbutus is a protected tree here on Vancouver Island it is not common to find larger pieces.... I've mostly worked on branches up to about 6'dia. Strange... I guess it is because the wood is green that it is white! Green Arbutus turns like butter... this is considerably harder! But it does have a beautiful grain pattern in it. It also polishes very well... as it was to be used with food I didn't use anything other than sandpaper on this! I was pleased! Thanks for watching Larry .
