Minis 1 - The Cuts (1 of 2) ·

Turning miniatures isn't much different from turing 'regular size' - same cuts - smaller scale - and a different cutting tool - a 1/4' bench chisel. This video ( 1 of 2 on cuts) shows you how I do the basic cuts - with a bench chisel, used like a bedan. The next video will be how I do the neck of a Drozda-esque 'onion' finial. I've also done videos using these basic cuts to turn a miniature plate, bowl, hollow form, hollow form with finial and a Sphere with Finial & Icicle on a Pedestal.. I've also done Illustrated Step by Step HOW TOs you can print, add notes to while watching one of these videos - and take to your lathe to try out what I've showed you. Miniatures are quick and fun to turn. Try it, you'll probably like it! http://web.hypersurf.com/ charlie2/Turning/Miniatures/Miniatures1.html If you have any questions you can post them here or e-mail them to me at charlieb@accesscom.co

Minis 6 - Miniature "Onion Finial" (part 1 of 2) ·

Turning miniatures is a lot of fun. Turning miniature plates and bowls is pretty quick and easy to learn to do. Miniature hollow forms are a bit trickier but with a little trial and error, they're not that harder to do. It's turning delicate miniature finials for the top of a little hollow form that can be a bit 'challenging'. But once you've seen how it CAN be done, things get a bit easier. I hope this video and the one that follows gets you thinking 'Hell, I can do THAT. I'm going to give it a try. YOU CAN DO IT!

Turning miniatures can be a lot of fun. Don't need much wood, don't need any expensive tools (ok to a chuck IS needed) and they can be quick and easy to turn. This is the first of a series of videos on turning miniatures. This specific video is on using a simple bench chisel like you'd use a more expensive and a bit harder to find bedan to make some basic, but pretty precise cuts you'll use turning miniature plates, bowls, lidded boxes, hollow forms, lids and finials. The next video will be on turning a simple miniature bowl. That will be followed by a video on turning a miniature hollow form. Finally, I'll show you one way to turn a miniature finial to top off a hollow form. I hope after watching these video - and checking out the stuff at this link, YOU will have a go at doing some miniature turning. http://web.hypersurf.com/ charlie2/Turning/Miniatures/Miniatures1.html

Most turnings are LOOK - BUT DON'T TOUCH. And once their done - they just SIT THERE. The result of a VERY dynamic process - is a static piece? That seemed very pararodoxical to me. So I keep exploring ways to have the piece continue to be dynamic - and up to now that required actual contact between the 'audience' and the piece. NOT ANYMORE! One word - ARDUINO. The Arduino is a member of the Stamp Controller Family - a programmable micro-computer and support circuits - on a 2 3/4' x 2' little printed circuit board. Programmed via an on board USB port using the 'C' computer programming la
