Jewelry

So many different wood objects can be turned on the lathe. They can be functional or artistic. Often when we think artistic, we think objects of art for our households.

But I challenge you to think objects that we can wear! Yes, jewelry is a gender neutral concept. And what a better way to show off that special piece of wood or to show off your turning talents!

And when you starting thinking jewelry, there are so many things that can be made!! How about: watches, earrings, broaches, cuff links, hair pins, barrettes, bracelets, etc.!!

Hand Turned Wood BraceletHand Turned Wood Bracelet by Erin Morey
In this photo tutorial, Erin uses a single piece of wood to turn a hand bracelet. She uses a set of Easy Wood tools to shape her bracelet. And to dress it up, she inserts InLace material into pre-planned grooves. The results are very nice and I'm sure we all know many people who would be proud to wear a bracelet this like!

Making a Necklace PendantMaking a Necklace Pendant by Hans Wunch
There are many ways to make necklaces on the lathe. We like this one because it's a two-part project where part 1 turns the outer shape and part 2 turns a little hole to attach the necklace string or chain. So, it's entirely a turning project.

It's also interesting because this turning is mounted to the lathe with double-sided tape. I'm a big fan of (good) double-sided tape for small projects. It's easy to use and makes the project very quick.

In this photo project, you get to see each step along the way to making the pendant. We're sure that you'll be able to do it. Now the only issue is how many are you going to make and what material are you going to use??

Turning a Wood Ring with a Veneer InlayTurning a Wood Ring with a Veneer Inlay by Francois Audeon
In this detailed photo tutorial, Francois shows us how he makes a custom sized wood ring on the lathe. He uses a veneer inlay to provide beauty by creating contrast to the ring basis wood. It also strengthens the ring sufficiently that he can not break them between his fingers!

To me, he's got a winner!! Now it's time for you to try it out!!

Turning BracletsTurning Braclets by Gary R. Smith
If you've considered making jewelry, making bracelets might be one item to consider.

In this photo tutorial, Gary's first project shows how turn a solid wood bracelet. He does an excellent job of photographing the steps to the work holding to ensure that you can turn both sides of the bracelet for the best finished item.

Then Gary shows how to cut a dado into the side of the bracelet to insert an inlay which really dresses up a single wood bracelet. Not to be outdone, Gary then shows how to make a segmented wood bracelet which would let to all kinds of designs for bracelets!

And finally Gary shows how he applies finish to the bracelet to make it ready for wearing including showing a wonderful holding jig.

This project ends up showing you how to turn 3 different types of bracelets!
