Pocket watches are both a fashion statement and a remembrance of days of old. At one time, anyone with a watch had a pocket watch. But now if you have a pocket watch, you are saying that you value the watch more as a piece of jewelry than anything else.
So, it's you're making a pocket watch, you're making jewelry. This allows us to think hard about the type of wood or woods, the shape and the final appearance of the watch. This a piece of jewelry that someone is going to be proud of!!
In this photo tutorial, PaPaDan shows us how he turns a pocket watch. He uses turner's quality double-sided tape which is a wonderful invention. It's perfect for this type of project!
PaPaDan uses a skew (on it's side as a scraper) for this project but you could just as easily (personal experience) use a bowl gouge since this is a faceplate turning!
These watches are fast to turn and can be used as a pocket watch or be attached to a necklace as a Pendant Watch for women.
Russ says: This article is presented as the answer to the numerous requests that I have had for information on making pocket and pendant watches. These have been popular as gifts and at every venue where they have been offered to the public. Although I make them in batches of 20 or more, these same instructions can be applied to making only a couple of them at Christmas time. These watches are a good way to use up the wood scraps from trimming larger pieces.
