Tool Handles

Making your own wood turning tools is very popular. It's an easy way to make a tool that's a custom design just for you. And you can easily turn the handle on the lathe. In fact, I have several friends who have made wonderful tool handles from exotic woods that are quite stunning. And it's easier than you think, check it out...

Screwdriver Handle TurningScrewdriver Handle Turning by Richard Wile
In this photo tutorial, Richard shows us how he designs, lays out and turns handles to fit the Lee Valley screwdriver shanks.

The end result of this project is a 3-piece set of screwdrivers. And Lee Valley makes these 3-piece shank sets available in slotted, Phillips and square tips.

Richard does a great job of explaining his thought process and how he figures out the size and shape for his handles. He then explains how to efficiently make all 3 pieces using a single piece of wood using a story board. Richard also provides a couple of alternatives for drilling the holes to hold the shaft. He then explains his turning process and his unique finishing process!

Richard also provides a diagram of the handles that he designed and his story board to get you started in making your own set.

Forgotten Handles - Do a good turn for your handsForgotten Handles - Do a good turn for your hands by Alan Lacer
I really like and believe this statement made by Alan, "I love how a custom handle feels and works in MY hands: fit to my grip, my turning style, and a length that gives me proper leverage. Plus, I want each handle to have its own distinctive look so I can find it in a hurry when my shop is buried in shavings."

That statement should be enough motivation for anyone to turn their own tool handles.

In this tutorial, Alan walks us through the steps to make our own tool handles. He also explains that many types of ferrules can be used and shows pictures of several being turned.

Turning Tool HandlesTurning Tool Handles by Ron McKinley
Ron shows us how he makes tool handles. This tutorial was written in cooperation with Thompson Lathe Tools.

Ron shows us how to make tool handles using brass ferrules that you can make or that you can buy. He also shows how to make a tool handle for a tool with a tang (flat plate) instead of just the round tool bits. This is a very good thing to know!
